Comment: Western Australia Trip 2012 – Part 15 : Cape Arid to Canberra

A great trip and a wonderful set of blogs. Thank you for all the effort. Cale Le Grand is near the top of our bucket list for a return visit. Saw it only on a day trip from Esperance but plan to spend some real time there. And now we know much more about the coast on either side, thanks toy your blogs.
Can you recommend a suitable reference book on Australian Native flowers and shrubs that we can carry with us into these areas? I have learned a great deal about Australian plants and flowers from you and Stephen L.
Thanks again and we await you next adventure. I'd like to know more.

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your kind comments. That stretch of the WA coast has a lot to offer, and I think you could easily spend quite a bit of time there to see all that it has to offer.
As for a book on native plants. The short answer is that no single book exists. Unlike animals and birds where there are maybe a few hundred species, there are literally tens of thousands of different plants, so no single book could possibly fit even the common ones in. For an example there are 3 weighty volumes just to cover all the Eucalypts. I have a bit of a library collected over the years but far too many books to carry with us when we travel. Many tourist centres have a range of plant publications, some are technically based while others are written for the layman. There is a series available in WA based on the colour of the flowers (pink, yellow etc) and also a little pocket sized series put out by the WA Dept of Conservation and Land Management that covers various plant groups (orchids etc). In other states keep an eye out for regional plant guides, and/or guides to particular species eg eucalypts or wattles. Suggest google botanical gardens bookshop to get a good overview of what is available.
Hope that helps a bit,
Cheers,
Val
