Poor you! I have been meaning to read your blog as I knew it was there but haven't had a moment to sit and read it. I'm glad you are ok but I do understand your confusion and fright. It was indeed a day to have stayed home.
Your car story reminds me of when I lent my car to my visiting parents who took my 2
young girls to the zoo for the day. After leaving the zoo, they stopped at a cafe at
the beach in
Fremantle.
The spot they parked the car in was next to a
bright yellow Commodore with some boys leaning on it chatting as youths do. The boys called out very friendly greetings to them, so my parents went inside for their coffee. Not more than 8 minutes later they came back out and the boys rushed to greet them as they approach my car - saying they had just seen someone break into their car, that they tried to stop them, but they were gone. They went on with all sorts of advice and suggestions for my parents about what they should do, what the people were like etc. Upon reflection my parents hadn't noticed that the 2 that told this story had blocked their view of the car, and the other boys were on the far side of the car. Then the boys in the Commodore took off, whilst my parents were preoccupied inspecting the damage - smashed side window, stolen camera from hatch-boot, stolen backpack with kids new zoo toy and old favourite teddy bear and bits and pieces. My parents had been duped. They had caught the boys in the middle of breaking into my car and they were covering up! Finding themselves alone, they rang the police who took over 1.5hrs to come to the scene only to confirm that yes, that type of thing had been going on but nothing they could do. At least the insurance co. paid out on the stolen camera and things and cost of repair to the car and no one was hurt. The kids were very scared by the whole thing and now they are very careful to put their ipods etc out of sight when they leave the car! Just 8 minutes and it all happened by the very people standing in the
carpark beside them. Some people!!

Thanks for your message, Michelle. It is a horrible experience to have something like that happen - and often we blame ourselves, the victims, rather than the culprits! It's hard to imagine how people have the nerve to be so blatant about what they are doing. When I thought my car had been stolen, my imagination went into overdrive - I put that down to watching the first series of 'Underbelly'. If that's all it took, I'm glad I didn't watch the rest :-). It would have been worse for your parents because it was your car, not theirs. I'm glad the insurance paid up and the kids take more care now.
The bruising has subsided but I still have a bump under my right eyebrow, the size of a bantam egg, from the trip. That is the worst thing that happened to me in my 22,000+ klm trip so I haven't been deterred.
Keep up the good work. Exploroz is a valuable website!
Cheers
Carole
