Comment: Remembering our Explorers - Edward Kidson (1882 - 1939) Geophysicist an

Mick I've heard of dip sticks (met a few as well) but never a dip circle. Knowing next very little about navigation I have never heard of this sort of navigation or what it would be used for. I'm conversant with magnetic correction but that's about the sum of it.

Interesting read. Also interesting the link between America and the exploration of our outback & by a Pommy Kiwi of all people.

Cheers

Dunc, you'll find a good biography of Kidson here http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/4k12/kidson-edward It goes a long way towards explaining why he was held in such high regard by luminaries of the era like Mawson. It also covers his military service during WW1 which was also interesting to say the least.

Cheers Mick
