Is the turbo diesel motor in the 100 series the same as that used in the 80 series. If not, is it better or worse and what are its shortcomings if any ?

Think the basic block and head are the same, but has the computer controlled injector pump, intercooler and few different add-ons. They make the 80 series look a bit agricultural, as far as performance goes.

I think theres a bit more to it than that. The 80 series td was pulled from the market with little explanation but it was thought that Toyota doubted the 1hz big end bearings would live up to toyotas usual reliable record in the td (didnt stop nissan with their 3.otd) I believe other mods have been made to the later model td to rectify this.

Davoe,

I'd agree with with you that may more changes than I mentioned, but I was merely generalising about some of the changes. Both 80 series turbo's, the 1HD-T, and 1HD-FT, are different engines to the 1HZ, and the bearing problems were caused by a batch of poor bearings, in the 1HD-T. Anyone that has had big end problems with the 1HD-FT, would be plain unlucky.

I thought the cessation of turbo models in Australia, was caused by tariff problems, but I might be wrong?

Hooroo...

Hope they have Davoe because there has been lots said about bearing failures on torbo'ed 80 series.
Dont know if Tojo didnt put enough meat in the big ends but no doubt some one eyed Toyota owners will find a plausible reason! LOL
