Hi fellow travellers, my wife and I are looking for temp work between Perth and Karratha, The boss [wife] is a cook with 10 years in Age Care cooking here and in NZ, we are both fit, healthy, and trustworthy, we have travelled around the coastline from the Gold Coast to here just outside Perth. We have had a great time and met so many great people, however the backpackers have taken most of the farm and harvest work [we have been told they work for very low pay because they have to work to get extention of their visa's] Any ideas appreciated.

Regards tnt

Have you tried "jobs for travelers", I realise the temp job marketing is biased towards backpackers, but could be worth a try.

Sorry can't help you but a friend and his wife just got back from doing a lap and said how hard it was to find work
They are both in their mid 20's she is qualified in childcare and he is an experienced carpenter / builder and has a semi truck license

Surprised they struggled to find work

Good luck

With the downturn in the mining industry Aussie wide there will be lots looking for work especially in the west. Was reading recently the bottom has fallen out of housing and rentals at Karratha and other mining towns because of all the miners being retrenched.

You therefore may have picked a bad time to do the trip if relying on work to finance it.

Hi tinga, perhaps the roadhouses or stations/farms enroute may need a cook. country pubs seem to be also on a down turn, but possibly cook needed. try mining camps/sites and catering companies- even with a downturn, they all need cooks. otherwise, stay in Perth a while, a quick read of local paper will tell if there are local ads for cooks... maybe work and save, then travel. another idea- do you have a van or similar? try being an itinerant 'roadside' vendor, cook and sell from your van (eg: at country shows/races).
agree with thoughts about the mining downturn. all the best.

Mike, they will need council approval plus health certification if they would be selling any type of food product.

That's true tony F8, - i didn't expand on the pre requisites for this idea..requires decent van + eqpt , even better if formally set up for it, adhering to food handling standards, correct hygiene, adequate refrigeration, etc.. and a roadside vendors licence . have seen these at various events around country.. field days, races, fetes, local carnivals/ sports , remembrance/event parades, blessing of fleets, 4wd shows, c/van and camping shows, Easter shows, .... seems enough to keep the traders going for other things such as sideshows/ kiddy rides as well.
thought since there's a cook, worth consideration if within their range of choices.
these days anything you do requires some sort of bureaucracy, permit, licence, standard.

Try caretaking country properties - have a look in the Countryman for ads. There is plenty of work for those that actually want to work. We are near Stanthorpe in Qld and the place is crawling with overseas backpackers - all working. Some Aussies want work served up on a plate.

When I was travelling, I met people at different caravan parks who were doing jobs suitable for their trade, in exchange for a site.
What does a tradie charge per hour now a days. A couple of hours work would save them a few dollars, and get you some accommodation.
