A question for those of you with satphones. If you had a satphone that has been disconnected for any reason, can you still make an emergency phone call, like you can on a Mobile phone (on any mobile even without a sim card you can dial 112 and it connects you to the same place as 000).

Not sure Nige, But it sure raises an interesting point doesnt it!!!!! If the answer is yes, why would we buy a Sat Phone simply for emergency calls? Good Question. (PS, I suggest anyone with a sat phone doesnt fall to the temptation of taking out the sim card and attempting to call the coppers.)

Yep I would be better to ask the satphone company than actually try it.

This question has come up in my workplace recently as we service communities in the NT and use sat phones often. The following is quote from optus.

"Sat phones, like mobiles, can dial 112 form any location to lock on to an available network for emergencies."

Do you know if that applies to the US LEO networks (Globalstar and Iridium) or to just Optus and Telstra geostationary networks?

I can confirm it applies to globalstar network but don't know about Iridium?. This advice came from optus because they are our main communications service provider.
