I have used a variety of field guides for the identification of birds over the years, starting from when I was at primary school in the late fifties as a member of the Gould League of Birdlovers. We always travel with a guidebook in the glovebox and we have settled on Simpson & Day's Field Guide to the Birds of Australia as our travel companion. While keeping the original organisation and structure to the book, which makes it easier for us to rely on memory as to where to flip the book open, the latest edition I am reviewing here has been updated to incorporate the latest knowledge on taxonomy and genetics when classifying birds. There are four general series of field guides for Australian birds, and each has their strengths and weaknesses; however, we have found that the Simpson & Day books give us just what we need in one compact volume. I thoroughly recommend it to all travellers.
