Hi. I have an ironman winch which I have just rebuilt due to water ingress. I was wondering if anyone has a link or info on tieing the rope back to the drum. It has no holes or bolts or anything to secure rope. It was just wrapped around and threaded through under itself but not sure exactly how it was. Thanks in advance.

That is pretty much all you do, any connection to the drum is only to stop it slipping when initially loading your rope on
The friction of several wraps of the drum is what takes the load not the end connection on the drum

Yep realise that but was trying to work out the knot to do to hold rope on drum. Like you say tho any knot will do to hold rope until a couple of winds are on drum. Thanks.

Maybe even use a cable tie to hold it in place to get a few wraps on it?

Clove hitch? This will allow a smooth transition to the wraps.

Question sort of relevant, why do the specs of winch say put the rope on drum with overwind and not underwind coiling, cant see the reason for this as motor runs both ways,my winch mount (Nissan gu) does not allow me to fit the unit as o/w so turned it over and fitted upside down to get winch mounted,if it to do with the holding brake the way I have fitted is the same as supplied, cheers,Mike

Powering out on a lowmount generally works against the brake and creates enough heat to melt synthetic rope = unpreferred outcome.
