Hi Folks
Next week I'm hitching up the van and heading to Western Queensland via Walgett and Lightning Ridge.
I keep hearing and reading about trouble in Walgett. Has anyone travelled through the area recently and can give me an idea of what is actually going on around there. All information gratefully received.
Stay safe out there
Regards

Tj,

We have stayed at Walgett on several occasions. We camp just on the outskirts of town at a council campsite and have never had any problems. Parts of the town don't look very appealing but we have never had any trouble. When we have stayed here there have always been others using the site.

Hi TJ, I've stayed with friends in town (parked on the road) as well as at the Council camp area & never had any trouble. There is an RSL & Sporting Club in the town with the latter probably the more favourable at the moment.

None of the towns on the Darling live up their past reputations. QED.

TJ, when the subject of Walgett, Brewarrina, Bourke orWilcannia come up there is quite often members parroting the fact that these are unsavoury places to visit. Some years back they were. However the locals have turned all these communities around and they are now nice places to visit. I have been to all of the in the last few years and have enjoyed my stay.

It seems that you may have had doubts about Walgett by the way you asked the question in the OP. I was just reminding members that the reputations of these towns from a few years back in no longer the current situation. Enjoy your stay in Walgett.
