Can someone give me the height please. Not ASL but from the base to the top. Failing that can someone send me a section of track file that includes Big Red and I'll work it out myself.

Hey Mad Dog - the height changes - it is supposed to be 90 metres. Maybe Andrew thought about that when he was out there and worked it out with his GPS.
Meant to tell you on the other Post that Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks will never be tarred. Boulia to Bedourie to Birdsville will be finished in the next couple of years and then they will tar Birdsville to Windorah.

Have just done a search with Google and it seems that the consensus is that it is 90 metres in height. But wether that is to climb it or perpendicular height I am not sure. Doesn't look like 90 metres in perpendicular height to me(thats 300 feet)..but I could be wrong.

Willem, not like you to be wrong. Actually you are not (in this instance). Next person who comes along I can trust to do the right thing - will send them out to measure with their GPS. Must be time another EO turned up. Willem, why don't you measure it when you get here - you bought your GPS didn't you?

I've been looking at a track file downloaded from this site but it looks to me as though the person didn't make it over the top. I can see what looks like 3 attempts 61.9m, 59.7m and 70.1m but that is of course ASL.
This person was gaining height coming to a stop then reversing direction so I assume they were attempts. Yes Willem 300 feet from the base seems huge so that is probably ASL
Ok Ruth, we need someone with a GPS to measure the height around the base and then the top but from what I deduce from the track file the base is about 39m ASL so if the top is 90m then that makes it 51m from the base...roughly. Does that sound better Willem...165 feet

50m sounds about right from memory, also rember 2 attempts to no avail but will try again in May. The others with me said the Nissan sounded like a jet on the run up, got just to the top but not over.

We will be up there next (Anzac) weekend with 6 GPS equipped vehicles so I will see if we can get consensus on the height (although normal GPS are not especially accurate for altitude).

Hi,
I always thought it was about 60m, never checked it with a GPS.
I just checked one of our Travelogues but can't find it there either. Will check it next time we get there.

If anyone want's to read that travelogue, it's here:
2001 East-West Crossing

Cheers, Mike

Hi Mad Dog,

I just checked my tracklog from Oct last year and:

- the track leading up to the base of Big Red (from the west) is 37 metres
- the highest I got on Big Red as I went over was 70 metres

This means that Big Red stands 33isah metres above then plain on the western side where the track crosses the dune itself. As I recall just to the left (north) of the track as it crosses over there is a raised area of dune that could be somewhat higher again (dunno 5 or 6 metres maybe??) I didn't drive up there as we got there just on sunset and I was busy taking pictures. My piccy below is a part of one of those pictures.

I'll try and send you an OziExplorer .plt file thru the member message system.

Cheers
Stephen J.
