You need a SA Desert pass which you can buy online from this site and I think at various other places including Westprint Maps in Nhill.

You will need to apply to the Central Land Council for permission - and it could take some time.

Lindsay
I obtained permission earlier this year and travelled the Colson North to South the week after Easter. In order to get permission I had to deal directly with the anthropologist in Alice, and it was only on the eve of our departure for the trip that he confirmed that permission had been granted by the original owners.
As recently as yesterday I received a letter from the CLC stating that permission was not granted!
When we were given permission we were told that we were the first to be allowed since 1999 because someone had desecrated a sacred site.
Good luck.

Just to clarify the above, I put in the usual written request to CLC in Feb. When no reply had been received I rang and was put on to the CLC anthropologist. As luck would have it he was about to meet the original owners and was able to ask permission for us. The reply yesterday was in response to my original request. (www.clc.org.au)

Sorry Lindsay but it looks by the other replies as though my advice was not complete!! I travelled a short distance along the track during a crossing of the Simpson Desert and only purchased a Desert Parks Pass. Obviously more is required! Again my apologies.
