Battery cover for Ti

Hi All,
I have a Nissan Ti 4.5 Litre. I have just replaced the old 11 plate battery with a new 13 plate battery. This battery is larger and I no longer can fit the standard cover that fit the old battery. This cover seemed to provide cool via the plastic duct.
Is this cover really required to prolong the battery life etc?
