G'day, just been checking with Globalstar on there new rates. Bit of a shock to find that you can only suspend the account for 3 months maximum each year @ a cost of $11.00 per month and that the other 9 months will cost you $35.00 per month. If you are only going to use it for a month or two per year it would make sense to disconnect after you have used it and reconnect as required. $548.00 for first year then $348.00 after that versus $266.00 for first year and ongoing. I checked before buying my sat phone and was told that, "if you own your phone, after paying connection fee, you can pay by the month and suspend when not requeired". This now is not the case, seems to me that Globalstar are just ripping of the consumer. I am sure that a lot of people out there with R290 phones will not be signing up with Globalstar. Anybody want to buy a cheap sat phone, never been used?

Hi Phil
I just advertised a Sat phone in the EO Trader section of this web site.

It is on line and will incur no connection cost's.
Check it out and feel free to contact me.

Regards
John

Hi John

I connect to Globalstar via Vodafone. Call rates are GSM 60c per minute, Sat $2.97 per minute. Globalstar monthly connection fee $10.00 per month.

Talk to Vodafone.

Hi John

I just checked with Vodafone and apparently they no longer offer "no plan" agreements, the minimum is a $20 plan, and they do not offer connection to Globalstar for new accounts.

I guess that closes the Vodafone avenue.

We just hire a Sat phone for our desert trips as a saftey item. Not sure how much it costs, my brother has organised it - but a lot cheaper than buying something that is only needed a few weeks of the year.

I don't have a mobile phone either - I did have my daughters old mobile for a few months, but found that the Sim card expired before I used the $$$ - plus they are an intrusion, especially when on a trip!
