Has anyone done a costing of training it to Cairns to do do the Cape from there. How much is it and what do you need to do to prep the 4wd to go on the train. Also what type of accom. is best on the train for the trip up and how losng does it take?

Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,
The easiest way to answer all those questions is to go to traveltrain web site. Train is electric to Rockhampton and then diesel to Cairns. You are probably looking at just over 24 hours . Extremely cheap if you are old and live in Qld.

My friend did not have to travel on the train, she moved to Cairns 2 weeks prior, and someone else put it on for her.

Hi Charlie,

My wife and I travelled to Cairns from Brisbane in Sept 2002 and put the Pathfinder on the back of the train. We were on the Queenslander at the time and as a treat stayed in a first class cabin for our 25 wedding anniversay.

The trip took 36 hrs which does not beat all the speed records but was really fabulous. From memory the car cost about $287 which was quite reasonable considering the petrol savings made. The best of all was that we arrived some 2000klms latter fresh and ready to drive.

I'm sure that Qld Rail still offer this service but I suspect it is only for travelling passengers.

Great trip that we would recommend to everyone to do, we will again.

Happy travels,

Patrick

We looked at this option when we went to the Cape last year.

Told that QR will only take the vehicle if you travel on the train.(We were tight on time and would have flown to Cairns)

Made enquiries about road transport. Prices OK as I recall but the car must be completlely empty - not easy to get the rest of the gear up.

Ended up driving it.
