G'day everybody,
Okay, after my post a few days ago asking about the availability of in-car VCR players, I reckon Truckster was on the money when he said cassettes are too much of a hassle and DVD is a better proposition.
So, I'm looking on ebay at the moment at a ZANON unit. Anybody got one and can give me feedback please? It's a flip open unit in a black bag (bit like a lap-top set-up) and can hang up between the 2 front seats so the billy-lids can watch and not fight (yeh; right!!!!!). They seem to be on sale for $440- but the auctioned ones are going a bit cheaper than that.

Thanks mate,
I won't bid any higher than what I have so far. If I get it, so be it; if not well it won't matter.
Cheers,

G'day Eric
I'd love to be able to justify spending that much on a great system, but there are still too many other things vying for my hard-earned (hahaha) $$$$$$.

Hi Roachie,

I had a similair setup (forget the brand - was a Big W special ~$400) that worked fine except it had two major flaws. One was the design of the DVD cover that kept popping open on large bumps. The second problem was that it did not have auto resume. So, every time the DVD popped open it would go to the start, the kids couldn't get it back to where the movie was and I had to keep on going through the chapters till near the right part. After this happened countless times it was packed away in frustration and ended up being returned.

So, the moral of the story is make sure that (a) the cover locks down properly and (b) it has auto resume when stopped/switched off. This is also important when simply stopping. Its not like a VHS tape that simply restarts at the same point when the power is off. The sweetness of a "cheap" price is soon forgotten when it fails to perform properly.

I am currently looking at a roof mounted dropdown screen, but as I have already have a roof console for my HF and UHF it is not easy to mount. Only tonight I managed to find a NESA screen that appears to work with my existing console. As for the player, am looking at a Sony PS2 and inverter. This way not only get DVD's but also PS2 games. Still figuring out how to mount this so (a) fits in neatly and (b) is easily removed. Would welcome anyones ideas here!!

Cheers

Captain

Hi Roachie
Near me they have a computer market. They sell second hand laptops ranging from $500 up. for about $750 I have seen laptops with DVD drives in them.

A laptop like this could also be used for navigation with an inexpensive gps and oziexplorer. You could also put some games on it for the kids. And on a rainy night you can use it in the tent to watch a movie becuase its not mounted in the car.

Just a thought.
