Went out to buy a GPS today and was informed by the sales person that Magellen is a Dick Smith jobbie. Is this the truth? Being told this really put me off the Magellen! Was I cond into the Garmin with a sales ploy or is there validity in this claim?

Anyway.......ended up with a Garmin GPSMAP 60CS (colour screen) mounting bracket, fixed antena etc seems like a goa.

Saw a Magelan Gps with a "Thales badge" on it at AGFEST last week talked to the Rep and he said that Magellan is owned by Thales, They do Survey Instruments. Now, Thales is now owned by the Furgo group
Who are a Dutch company.
So to conclude Magellan was American but now it seams it is Dutch!
Don't know where Dick Smith comes in to it ?????

Funny eh? Alex. You are on the Internet and you do not bother to check Magellan Products out but you post a spurious question on this forum. If you beiieve the DS sales person you will believe anything.

Magellan has been around a while longer than Garmin etc. I would have thought that it would be common knowledge but obviously some people are uninformed.

For your info Magellan is a USA company. Their Head Office in Australia is in Perth. They produce and excellent product.

I got on to Magellan site matey...........no mention that I could find of who owned the "Magellan" name. Only head office details.

Don't get ya tight whiteies in a knot mate! I'm new to offroading and I didn't know.................So I thought i'd come here and ask some of you seasoned vetrens if this was true, as yes.......when the salesman told me this I thought it would be true.

Cheers, I now know this isn't so.

Av'a good one all.

Have to agree about Magellans product (hardware) but their latest software products were released without enough attention to their lack of content and reliability.

Have to agree with you Willem. If you go and buy something without research and believe what sales people tell you, well what can I say!!
Anyway,so what if Magellan were owned by D.S. the GPS itself is a very good product, doesn't matter who owns it. Seems to me that salesman was good as he turned Alex of Magellan whether by deciet or ignorance but got him to buy the product he was selling

Purchased a Magellan 315 in the US about 4 years ago. Loaded Ausie datasend waypoints.
Have moved on with a GPS sleeve on my Ipaq running Oziexplorer and Hema maps. The moving map tracked spot on in a recent Simpson crossing.
Took the 315 along as a backup.

For information, the last I heard ,Dick Smith ELECTRONICS is owned by Woolworths and they now also own Tandy as well.
Now who owns Woolworths?

Alex, had a play with the Garmin at work and really pleased with it, Don't think you will have any regrets.

Hi Bob,
Interesting point you raised about ownership. Fact is.....
Nissan is owned by Toyota and Ford owns Holden, I was amazed when i hear this mate, Why i even heard that my wife is owned by The Italian Government, aparantly she is on loan until they go to war again. She seems to be some kind of bomb expert, which i tend to believe as she is always exploding in the household.

NOTE : for those of you who believe everything you read, the above info is kinda bent a little ok..so relax, take a load off.

Cheers everyone !
