G'day,
Wondering if anyone has come across any new 63,360:1 (or something of a similar size) maps like the Forests Commission produced in the 60's & 70's. I have almost a full set of these covering all forest areas of Victoria. IMHO they are exactly the right size and detail for serious 4X4ing as 25,000:1 maps cover too little an area (A full set of the area I require would cost me a small fortune anyway!) . The 100,000:1 maps do not show the small tracks that are usually the best to explore/conquer.

BJC.

If the hubs aren't locked I fel like I'm in chains.

Why not 50,000:1?

25,000:1 are the ducks guts, they show everything in detail, contours which are important are also clearly marked on the 25's...

Any map that has details from the 70's would be as much use as a map made in the 80s... Tracks we did 3 yrs ago are now moved around with bypass' etc... 20 yrs?

Try the Melbourne Map Center for all scales.

Small point
Scale is 1:100 000 not 100 000:1 etc.

You would be hard pressed to find any old maps in print - most places would have shredded them by now with the digital age. Some organisations may have scanned old maps before destroying the printed stock.

I was supprised recently, to get a printed copy of 2 Geology maps I drew in the '80s ! Once they are all sold thats it - no reprints.

And on the subject of Geol maps - they are quite often a good sourse of more up to date roads/tracks in the more remote areas at 1:250 000 & 1:100 000 - as the geologist updates the base info if they have done field work and/or used aerial photos for compilation.
We used Geol maps in '01 to help locate the track from Jigalong to Durba.
