It looks like my Sportliner 2001 needs servicing the brakes, worn out or crystalized pads.
Can it be done in any car
shop?
Do I need to buy the bands first? Where?

Thanks

Cars of that era overseas suffered a lot from this "illness", non-ABS brakes lead many times to overheating and as a consequence the "soft" material of the brakes suffered, leading to hardening of the bands-pads, starting to not brake
well, making friction sounds and scratching the drums-disks. Had a Jeep Wagoneer and a Chevy Malibu with that. That is what mechanics called Crystallization, rearrangement of the crystal structure of the pads leading to hardening, a common process in Physical Metallurgy.
Of course a camper does not brake a lot but being electrical-mechanical brakes they apply a constant pressure, different to hydraulic brakes and since I am the 3rd or 4th owner of the Avan I can not know its early history.
Thanks anyway for the advise.

Forget all that high tech crap. Avan brakes are just simple old style brakes. I have only seen drum brakes on them, was yours a special build?

Just be prepared for a bit of expense as it will probably need new magnets and maybe backing plates and possibly drums, because of the way that electric brakes operate, if you have done considerable Kilometers, especially with some on dirt roads.

Only reason you would change backing plate is it's usually not much dearer than replacing the shoes.
Magnets maybe, but on a little Avan, I'd be very surprised if the drums needed replacing.
