We are travelling from
Perth to Queensland around July 2016 and are just starting our preparations. We have a semi off-road van ( Supreme Territory ) towed by a standard 200 series VX. I do not mind travelling on reasonable dirt roads for short periods to get to sights but I do not want to cause damage to either my tug or van so far from
home. Is
Cooktown about as far north as we can travel on good roads? We do not wish to leave the van and tent it etc as we like our comforts. If the road requires me to get out and drop tyre pressures etc I will give it a miss.

Bitumen to
Laura.
Many take vans to
Bamaga. You would have to carefully plan as obviously "gunshot" is out of the question but by leaving the van at critical points and then taking the vehicle only most of the sites can be seen.

By the sounds of your post you won't want to be taking your rig any further than
Laura, which means that yeah
Cooktown is pretty much the last main town heading north. Worth driving up to
Laura for the day though just to see the Quinkan
rock art.

We've just done the cape. We left our caravan at
Mossman and tented it all the way to the top. IMHO I reckon you could tow your van to
Weipa without to much drama. Being semi off road your van should be fine. Lower the tyre pressures and drive to the conditions. You will be pleased you did. Rio maintain a fair bit of the road as you get closer to
Weipa. So the last 15kms or so is some of the best dirt road you'll ever see.
