Hi all. We would like to travel from
Canberra to
Gerringong via Nowra using the Nerriga/
Braidwood Road on Wednesday and last used that road quite a few years ago when it was gravel most of the way. We have heard that it is mostly tar now and would be OK for us to tow our caravan that way. Does anyone tell us if this is correct please?
Thanks in advance.

If you go through Tarrago there's only about 2km of dirt left where they're rebuilding O'Allen ford. The rest of the road is really good. Going via
Braidwood to
Nerriga is quite a bit longer and I'm not sure how much dirt there is that way before
Nerriga. I drove via Tarrago a few weeks ago and
Canberra to Nowra was about 2.5 hours.

Hi Keir & Marg and thanks for replying. Would the O'Allen ford be OK for a landcruiser with 3.5t caravan? Sounds like a good way to get to the coast if we can use that road.

I was down there about 8 weeks ago - all good (but twisty in parts) except for Oallen ford. I would
check with RMS about the
bridge - drove through Tarrago a few weeks ago there was a
sign advising it was closed. Probably open now but make sure.

Mostly gravel from
Braidwood to
Nerriga, when I was last along there some months ago, but
Nerriga to Nowra is now sealed.

GBT - they must have dug it up as it was all sealed 2 years ago.

Canberra to
Gerringong via Nowra - the
Braidwood road Tarrago the
Nerriga is sealed.

Scott
GBT said "Mostly gravel from
Braidwood to Nerriga". He is right. The most direct way from
Braidwood to
Nerriga road is just that, mostly dirt. The
Goulburn Road to
Tarago way that I think you are talking about (you didn't make it clear) is longer and neither does it go near
Braidwood.
I don't know of anyone who goes that way. We all use the Bungendore to
Tarago road and then eastwards to
Nerriga etc etc. It also gets rid of the Kings Highway and the mugs that go that way.
We go that way about once a month and have never used the
Goulburn Road as it's a longer way. It used to be an interesting track before they fully sealed the
Nerriga to Nowra section. Darn it!!! Now it is getting crowded, so we may end up going the Hume to Kangaroo Valley way from
Canberra to Nowra.

I drove it from Jervis Bay to
Canberra last Wednesday with my 200 series towing a camper. Beautiful drive - we drove at sunset - sunlight in the eyes and wombats. Road was fine. Only had to slow down a few time due to potholes. Otherwise all good.
Had to go via
Braidwood as the Oallen
bridge was closed. I think it's closed until the 17th or something like that.

Just be aware that between
Nerriga and Sassafras you have the Eldrick River - it is a steep decent down and an even steeper ascent back out - the road is good with passing areas so slow and steady is the name of the game if you are towing something big and heavy.
