The Mini with 3G/wifi would be ideal in the vehicle, with a suitable mounting system, Joe. Have used our large one on top of the dash, with a suction windscreen mount, and doubt that it would pass scrutiny by the law. Though it is very easy to see in that position. :-)

Hema maps are really good, I find, though there are others who prefer different systems. Also have Hema Explorer........still to work that one out!

Joe,

Might pay to have a read of thread 130210, if you haven't already.

If you plan to run the iPad continually each day, say while logging your trip, the unit will run out of puff/shut down eventually. I also found that letting the screen go to sleep, to conserve power, also stopped logging, which leads to numerous straight logs. :-(

Joe it should be fine
From memory the program requires about 8 gig of free space to load the program but doesn't use that much after that
If you have any concerns you can ring Hema
I found them very helpful

I have been using Hema maps in my iPad mini and love it. Very simple to use and reliable.

My only suggestion is to get the 64g. By the time you add music, videos, photos, emails, etc 16g wont go far. Our 1st ipad was a 16g. It now sits on a shelf in the study because of this.

Hi

The Hema website says the Hema 4x4 Maps app is only 1.8GB. How much space you need for maps will dependent on how many you add to the standard set. You can get external memory devices for iPads (though a bit expensive) so that is one option if things get out of hand.

Assume you will need external GPS (bluetooth) if you not have the "cellular" iPad model.

Cheers

Greg that is true about the size but it needs a lot more memory to load the program as it loads some temp files first but they are removed at the end
I know this because I had trouble loading the program on my phone and rang Hema and that is what they said
You need 8 meg clear to load up the program initially

Yeah sorry, was just pointing out how much actual space required when installed.

Appreciate need for additional space when installing but that is just a case (if a problem) of temporarily removing a files (songs/photos for example) to free up space. Whack em back on after. All good.

Cheers

Yeah that is what I did Greg but it had me stumped, I pulled off some music and pics and had 6 gig free and it still wouldn't load saying I did not have enough storage space which is why I rang them and it was explained to me.

all good.

Hi Sue and Joe ,dont known how tech savy you are but if your ipad has no sim card it wont have build in GPS so you with require a bluetooth device or a plug in device like a Bad Elf to match your devicehttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bad-Elf-High-Performance-GPS-for-iPod-touch-iPhone-iPad-BE-GPS-1000-IN-STOCK-/231674836101?hash=item35f0e57485 As you already have 16 gb, its enough to run Hema providing your pads not overloaded with phots vid ect

i use a iPad mini 16GB with Hema maps and hema Explorer, with the great desert maps, Cape york, victorian high country and the Kimberley maps swell. Both take up 6.4GB of space.

Joe, I am loving the iPad Air with Hema 4wd maps, and 16gb is plenty, until obviously one day track logs etc might mount up, also if you download other maps etc.
You will however NEED an external GPS.

Ditto what Les said. Going to the Simon geo centre the maps were a god send. I didn't have timing out issues at all, maybe a settings thing. As for power usage, I just kept it plugged into lighter plug all the time. Used the windscreen sucker mount, fantastic, took stupidly good video too !

Many thanks to all, just one more question, hope this doesn't sound stupid but if I buy the iPad mini (its second hand) it is wifi cellular , will it have to have a SIM card to run the Hema maps.? I am not computer savvy as you probably have found out! I have no SIM card in my current IPad Air 2 as its wifi only have the 4g modem which we take when travelling, and is on a monthly plan with Telstra. I have a SIM card in my phone (iPhone 5) is it the same principle?

Hi

No need for sim card to run just apps and gps in the Ipad.

Cheers

Hi
The point the guys are making is when you buy an Apple iPhone or iPad there are two models

Wifi only

Wifi with 4g capabilities, this model has a built in gps which hema maps will use. No SIM card has to be installed but can be

If you have the wifi only one you will need to get an external gps as mentioned above

In both cases they work when no Telstra network available as they don't use it

Things like google or Apple maps require the phone network, in other words if no phone coverage they don't work.

Richard
