Hi George,
I strongly suggest using one of the dedicated housesitter websites to find a good housesitter. Aussie housesitters is a good one, but there are others. Also give yourself plenty of time and choose carefully, checking references and talking, by phone or better still via Skype, to prospective sitters.
Whatever you do dont go to a general website like gumtree to find a sitter. I understand that the main housesitter sites maintain a "blacklist" of undesirable sitters that have been removed from the list of available sitters, so at least when you choose sitters from those sites you can have some assurance that unsatisfactory sitters have been culled.
We have used sitters on a number of occasions, for as long as 4 months, and have always had a very good outcome. But I do know (firsthand) of others who have not been so fortunate.
Cheers,
Val.

Hi George
I house sit a lot. Can put you in touch with those people. Just finished a 21 day stint in Binningup near Bunbury looking after an upmarket house and three dogs. The dogs are fit now after walks every day on the beach.
Presently in NSW looking after a house, 2 goats, 3 hens and a wildish cat.
I am writing a book so this type of arrangement suits me (and the house owners)
well.
