11 killed in jeep accident
From correspondents in New Delhi, India
22may04

A VEHICLE flipped over in northern India today, killing at least 11 passengers who were travelling to a wedding, a news report said.

Ten other passengers were injured when the overcrowded jeep turned over after hitting a culvert near Jaroaa village in Hardoi district, 350km east of New Delhi, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, it said.

No other details were immediately available.

Road accidents are common in India, often blamed on poor roads and weak enforcement of traffic rules.

You have to remember that the word "Jeep" is used as a generic term in a lot of the world to describe any vehicle which slightly resembles a 4x4. I wouldn't be too quick to blame the yanks for this attempt to reduce the overcrowding problem in India. More likely to be one of those Asian brands we don't see much of here.
