Hi all. I have a 93 Patrol 4.2D DX LWD. It's pretty basic, but at least I don't get mud in my carpets.... Anyway, I went to Ngarkat & Big Desert a while back and when I came back & washed the car I noticed the paint peeling on the RH rear passenger door just near the corner of the 1/4 window. Yesterday, I noticed a big bubble under the paint below the RH side rear cargo area window. When I rubbed it with finger all the paint flaked off. Has anyone else experienced problems with their paint flaking off? This vehicle has never had repairs and was maintained in A1 condition from new by previous owner. Thanks.

PS. see also my post re OzTrail Tourer 9 Plus tent. After comments.

You will probably find that the previous owner had a bingle with the truck and it has been resprayed and was a quick touch-up job and now the overspray is peeling off. Other wise it is rust which is apparently common in GQ rear side windows.

Willem has hit it on the head.
Its been repaired sometime in its life.

DO you know the previous owner and the cars complete history as it was owned by your brother for fact, or just what the previous owner told you?

Hi Louie,
My brother had the same problem with his 1987 MQ, paint blistered on the roof,
rear doors and rear passenger door, when paint flaked off you could see there was no primer used when painted at the factory.
Talking to a chap who has always owned nissan vehicles and he told me that the nissan paint process a few years ago was not that great and nissan had a reputation of poor paint work.
I own a 92 GQ 4.2d and the paint work is fine, maybe your vehicle drew the short straw and received a substandard paint job from the factory.
Cheers

my patrol has the same issue, it is 95 dx ute. I finally washed it one day after driving across aus and then ploished it, little bubbles appeared that would flake off with your fingernail, i believe it is moisture related as after a few weeks out in the sun the bubbles dissapeared, i have the original paint on most panels.

Thanks all for the replys.

My wife's mother worked at the dealer who has maintained the vehicle from new, and they did everything that was required on the car, every 5000 km service in fact. She also knows the previous owner quite well. The dealer has no knowledge of any panel work being carried out. However, I noticed that the primer is very smooth and discoloured where the paint has flaked off, compared to the primer when you sand the paint back a bit further. My neighbour is a technical rep for an automotive paint company and he is going to have a look at it for me. I noticed that in these areas there are a couple of small stone chips. Possibly, moisture has got under the paint & into the primer, breaking down the bond.

I understand that in the US & Europe, there is a major class action by people with paint problems on their Nissan vehicles.

We'll see I suppose.

Cheers.
