I have some more details on this Place-Recent events.

From NSW Police Facebook post yesterday.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a couple were robbed at a rest stop near Coonamble on the weekend.

About 1.30pm (Saturday 28 November 2015), a man and a woman aged in their 70s stopped their white Toyota Landcruiser at Coonamble Rest Stop on the Castlereagh Highway.

A short time after they stopped, a man opened the rear doors and sat in the 4WD.

He pointed a sawn-off rifle at the couple and demanded cash.

They complied and handed over cash before the man got out of the Toyota and walked away.

The couple drove away from the location and contacted police.

Officers from Castlereagh Local Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

No one was injured during the incident.

Investigators are now appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area or have information that may assist with their inquiries to contact Coonamble Police Station on 6822 1488 or Crime Stoppers.

Police would like to speak to a man who was described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander in appearance, aged in his 30s, large build and unshaven. He was wearing a black cap with a neck flap and motif on the front, a dark t-shirt, blue and black chequered shorts.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

FURTHER INFO on another incident

Just found out that a motorhome was broken into at the same spot a week or so ago. Whilst the occupants were sleeping.

A handbag was stolen and the occupants woke up and scared them off.

Seems Coonamble is not a friendly place to stay.

checked on google earth. It seems there is a rest area beside the river opposite the main sports oval. On the Castlreagh hwy as you go into town from the south. Almost opposite the Servo on the right.

There is a CP in town which may be a safer option for an overnighter.

Frank you are right about the location of the rest area. We have stopped there for lunch a couple of times on this year's travels! It is well and truly "in town". Servo opposite. Houses along both sides of the road. Seems a fairly popular spot for coffee breaks and lunch - always several other rigs there when we were.

The same advice goes for every town you visit - better safe that sorry. No one town is immune from misdeeds, although you would be unlucky to be caught out in any town. Caravans lined up in a park are a shopping centre for the unscrupulous, who can watch after dark to see who goes to the showers at the same time, or move quickly along quietly forcing doors and grabbing wallets, cameras and small electronic goods while you are asleep. Often they are only after cash.

Lock and leave where ever you are, and don't be put of visiting a town because you hear of robberies. They can happen anywhere.

Motherhen, you are quite right in what you say.

Being help up at gunpoint in broad daylight is a bit out of the ordinary though. Bushrangers come to mind.

That is why I have copied the article to a few places where Tourists like us pick up info.
