UHF in ashtray?

I just got a Uniden UH7700NB+Antenna (AT-770) for my 2009 Landcruiser Sahara (200 series). Only issue, is with the Sahara you can't really get an overhead unit to store it in & the centre console's pretty full. So I was thinking...what about the ashtray? Anyone had any experiences with this? I've measured and the UHF unit is smaller than the ashtray. I just want it to look like a pro fit 'n' finish & not like I just grabbed some glue to stick this unit in a space that sorta fits.

Hi Philby,

I had location limitations when choosing a UHF for my BT50 - nowhere to put the unit. I chose one of Uniden's remote speaker-mic models with the controls in the mic. The radio itself is velcro'd to the carpet under the seat and the speaker/mic/control unit is between the seats on the centre console. We find it very convenient.

I guess you've spent your money already, but if you wanted to pursue this option and still have all the packaging etc from your current purchase, you might be able to return your unit for an upgrade to something like a 7760NB. You'd be up for an antenna, though, unless you can find a communications retailer that is doing package deals.

Just a thought.

Yeah that was the original plan and I had been saving for one like that but this pack was priced to clear due to it being the last in the store. For the sake of saving $250 I'm willing to think outside the box.

You will get lots of info from lcool 200 site about radio positions. I have mine in a roof console but many have the radio behind the dash and use a mic with the controls built in,

Does yours have a sunroof? The Sahara does as standard (I believe) which makes an aftermarket roof console not really an option (unless you know of any).

I have a Prodigy brake controller in the ashtray and a GME 3420 straight above it, all with no holes in the dash, so the Uniden will go in the ashtray no probs.

As long as it's mounted evenly in the hole, you won't notice that it isn't a factory fit finish.
