Has anyone got any experience of upgrading/replacing the AHC on my Sahara?. It will not cope with 300 kg ball weight van, plus drawers, fridge etc and stays on 'low' setting, so I have to look at alternatives.
It currently has Coil rite coil assist bags set at 30 psi which I am told is max - even though they have the Kevlar sleeve.

Automatic Height Control - adjusts the ride height between Low, Normal and High (with speed constraints).

Is that so that when you turn the motor off th car lowers to enable the elderly and handicapped to get out!!!

What's next. My god

Anyway -- enjoy the electronic age.

Buy some heavier springs Also check how much weight you have over rear axle. You may well be exceeding axle weight limit.

You cant after all, just load everything up and go there are limits and it sounds like you may have exceeded yours..
One of the reasons why adjustable height control and towing dont go together very well

I searched AHC and found this. You may find it helpful.

Link: Toyota Flagship's Active Height Control limitations

We travel solo and thus have to carry all manner of recovery, comms, first aid plus the usual food and spares etc. We recently got the GVM increased. After reading thet article I would never buy a car with AHC. Too many issues upgrading the suspension and loading configurations to make a new car worthwhile. Methinks the 100 will do us. And we don't tow anything any more.

Thanks Phil - read that article previously that says nothing relevant to upgrading - simply how to set it all up when towing.
Incidentally in my opinion (apart form the weight limit issue) is that the AHC is brilliant, the ride is superb, the ability to raise it in 10 secs from the drivers seat when on rough ground, plus lower it to put heavy items in the rear in are benefits i think well worthwhile.
So your suggestion of selling the car and caravan and never towing agin aren't really of much help to me, but thanks for taking time to reply.

Hi Andrew

It wasn't a suggestion for you mate. (smiling)

For several reasons we got sick of the trailer/van inhibiting going to the places we wanted. So we sold the camper van.

One son has a range rover or land rover that has it and they never use it. I now believe that it is called Active Height Control. They just leave it disabled. I only know he has it because when he brought it around to "brag to Dad!!" and I went to get in he told me to wait and he lowered it. Maybe he thought I was a cripple or something. Just showing off.

Luckily we chose the GXL and not the Sahara. They were side by side. I am not scared of electronics as I worked for 48 years in the field. We travel solo in remote places. So the less "smarts" that can go wrong to better we like it.

We didn't see a person in five days last trip and we were moving all the time. No internet or phones out there.

We had a "water in fuel" warning on the GXL when up in the high country. Got the book out and it said it was a warning and that I could drive for a short distance. Got home and next day a mechanic said the bloody sensor was stuffed. No water in the fuel at all. What if it had been a real exhaust sensor, or the like, that stopped the motor etc.

But I also acknowledge that for some they are great and may in some situations work better than the some drivers. So -- Enjoy

Andrew
I had the same problem , I tow a Kimberley Kamper which is around 2000kg loaded. I also had the coilrite spring helpers which would not keep the suspension on "normal" What I did was fit King springs (KTRS-79) which are specifically made for the AHC 100 series. They maintain the self levelling also. I have found that now the car will cope with the load of the KK. Maybe give them a try!

Good luck

Another vote for king spring KTRS-79
Absolutely love my AHC, if you need some clearance just lift it up to get over that obstacle.
branch a bit too low, lower it down to get under it
The ride is still great with the king springs , I took my Sahara through the kimberleys last year travelling for 3 mths on some very rough roads and all good ,towed a caravan with about 280 kgs ball weight total trip 18k kms
also love the fact you can make the shocker hard or soft I find it you can smooth out the corrugations more

Ross

Mine has an ATM of 1600kg, I carry extra fuel for outback travel (Connie Sue etc) Solar panels, Camp chairs (on trailer) and a boat loader so I think my approximation is about right. Also love the AHC for reasons that Bob posted.

Speak to DAZ at AUTOCRAFT in geelong.
he owns and runs a mechanics shop that does all stuff to land cruisers.
Has removed the AHC to alot of 100series and everything works as it should... electrics and computer wise..
he really knows his stuff on the 100series.
He can do what you want.. to fix the AHC problem.

What he said.

Rip it out and fit proper suspension. Have a look at LCOOL.org. Oz Landcruiser forum with heaps of info on this subject.
Good for soccer mums, not so good as a 4by.
