Undertaker I think you'll find that in 4wd areas the Explorer is very much in the minority compared to Landcruisers and Patrols. The reason is of course quite simple - cruisers and patrols have been in the field for much longer than the explorer and have won a reputation for reliability and capability. Many people are put off going for Ford because of the legendary unreliability and poor build quality of their sedans. Whether or not the low standard has been carried over to the 4wd I don't actually know but like most I'm not prepared to take the risk. If I was short of cash I guess I would be tempted but while I can afford to buy at the top end of the range I will.

Aaaandy ,check your facts, the ford explorer has been the no 1 selling 4x4 WORLD WIDE since 1997 , in the scheme of sales AUS is but an annoying pimple on any vehicle makers butt.

I will not say that the Explorer is better than the cruiser or patrol off road but i will say this as for reliability the Ford Explorer is one of the most reliable 4x4s in the world it has been proven world wide this is why it is the largest selling 4x4 on the planet out doing it's nearest rival by nearly 50%, the Explorer is the bench mark for 4x4 vehicles of it's type, it was the first of it's type and all others are just copies, it's bad reputation was because of a type of Firestone tyre exploding under certain conditions due to weak side walls, no fault of the car so if you are going to bag a car do some research first. I'm not saying this because i own an Explorer, i know the limitation of my car, it's the truth, oh by the way my Explorer is the model with 16" rims it did not have the tyre exploding problems reported by the media, that was the model with 15" rims. Oh and another thing the Ford Explorer was built in the USA not Australia like the falcon, which i assume your refering to when you say thier sedans. The Ford Explorer was built for a certain market it's a highway cruiser with off road capibility, we only get one of 5 differant models, it is also available in the F250 size 2wd and 4wd, diesel and V8 !!!

Amazing what you can do with statistics.

The Explorer is the best selling 4x4 in the USA (world's biggest market) but nowhere else. The Freelander is the best selling 4x4 in Europe but that doesn't mean it's better off-road than a Landcruiser!

Baldrick, i think you should read my post again there is nothing in there that said the Explorer was better off road than the Landcruiser. Quote : ( I will not say that the Explorer is better than the cruiser or patrol off road ) End quote !!!

Baz,

You are sorta right about the Explorer, The reason there are so many about here in the USA is the price compared to say and Landcruiser they are about half the price.

The US market is very varies and I would guess that 99.9999% of Explorers never see an offroad or rough road situation as in Australia. Many 4WD's are used however in ice/snow situations which a great part of the USA is subjected to during the winter.

Explorers here come in a 2 door or 4 door models with 6 or V8 motors 2 or 4WD

The next model up is the Expedition which would be a little bigger than an L/C and comes with two size V8's

The largest on is the excursion which is a MONSTER and comes with an engine option of V8, V10 or I think is a 7.9l V8 Diesel

Thanks Bruce, sorry i got on my soap box but it erks me when they bag a vehicle because of a reputation it does not deserve, Ford carry on what Henry Ford designed the car for, a vehicle for the people, cheap enough and reliable for the average worker to afford.
