This came up in a thread recently that I can't find. IIRC the question was about what you do when you're exploring a road or track and you come to a
gate on what looks like private property. The advice was to do your research beforehand if you can or try to locate the local owner or resident for information/permission.
Victorians have access to private road data (and a heap of other info) on the interactive map site
Forest Explorer. 'Fraid I've no idea how up to date this is.
Other states?
Apparently a Forest Explorer map can be exported in geo-referenced PDF format and so be used digitally on eg.the PDF Maps app by Avenza.

Generally if you don't get a shot gun pointed up your nose is a good sign!
