Why do you need one as it is like a suburban road with so much traffic.

Yeah, I've heard it's getting like Pitt Street DW but we're doing 7 days in the desert - Rig etc., therefore carrying a bit of weight. A Sat Phone is just a comfort thing that doesn't cost $50,000 for aerial rescue from Melbourne if needed via our PLB.
We are doing some photographic things and not, of course, travelling all day as some do. We have some days stationary for some personal research.
Just love the "Green" desert.

Hi DW

Not quite like that and in the event of an emergency, and if you are waiting for another vehicle which could be well over an hour or even longer in some situations along there, it could be a life and death situation.

The only reliable outside world communications will be either a sat phone or HF radio which will give you immediate coverage to the outside world.

Why is it that we spend tens of thousands of dollars on our vehicles and caravans/campers, yet will not outlay less than $800 for an item that could be a life saver.

It always seems to come down in the end to those that take their own life and safety very seriously and those that rely on someone else passing by.

Just my thoughts, and yes, when we are in any remote location we always have on board a HF Radio, Sat Phone and a PLB. If the price of the Sat Phone is dear, I bet most people will have a smart phone that can cost well over a $1000, yet think nothing of buying them.....so why not a Sat Phone?

Cheers

I *think* the OP is doing a crossing but doesn't want to go up to Mt Dare ??
Maybe straight up Pedirka Tk to Dal ??
If so, that track is awesome since grading last year, we drove down it in Early Oct after a Rig crossing and it was sweet :)

dad, not sure mate, I would phone Mt Dare.
Maybe they can get one to Hamilton Stn for you a few days prior if they are heading down past that way ?
Dropping back to BV end is ok in general, the Visitors Centre but not sure what happens if that's closed when going through ??

Oh yeah, if going down Pedirka Tk, stop and check out Cherrikana Waterhole. A small access tk on the southern side to the east, leads to a small pumphouse, if stock there (they are quite ok with people) park up and quietly walk down to the bore running into a very nicely vegetated waterhole, loads of birdlife.

Thanks Les, I contacted the Pink Pub and got the general low down but we both agreed to have a chat closer to our Simo trip in late May.
My first time through the Pedirka Trk so I'm doing my homework. Thanks for the Info; we will have a look at Cherrikana Waterhole sounds good and we are in no rush.

I'll give Graham a call at Mt Dare re the Phone and Hamilton provided it's not mucking people around too much.

Cheers

Les, The summer rains that have closed the tracks for the past couple of weeks would have trashed the Pedirka track. Its still closed and likely to be for a while yet.

Yes, OP will have to check all tracks before he goes, no mention of when he plans to go.
Pedirka might be eroded again, usually at creek just a little south of Dalhousie Springs proper gets it bad.
Rain affects all tracks in the area.
When we came out of Purnie to Dal in May, that section was really bad (rocky, big washouts, but since graded again and pretty good in July on same section.

"Pink Pub" ??? "Dal" ? "Simo" ? Geeze...

Give Mt Dare a call re: Sat phone hire, or Land Wide hire, they will send the phone out to you prior to the trip.

You can buy a refurbed sat phone for $375 from sat phone sales and get a casual plan for $20 per month plus calls at $1.00 a min
