G'day all,
I'm wanting to convert my EOTopo ECW maps to RMAP so I can use them in Twonav on my Ipad mini.
I have downloaded the latest trial version of CompeGPS Land to try and convert the format but for the life of me I can't find the option to convert.
Any idea's.
Thankyou.
Al.

Hi Gramps,

Sorry for the late reply.

I have downloaded this program thankyou. I contacted John Thorn the producer of this program and he said yes it will convert but I had to download an additional program to complete the task.

At this stage it looks to be maybe over my head but I will see how it goes.

Thanks mate.

Gramps, thanks heaps for that link.

John at MAPC2MAPC is helping me convert a file so I bought his program.

Highly recommend.

Hi Wicket,

I loaded the ECW maps in the Twonav app but it doesn't recognise it.

Are you able to describe to me the steps you took?

Thanks mate.

Hi Wicket,

I'm out of luck there. it looks like only the paid version with convert the maps.

The MAPC2MAPC program Gramps linked looks like my only option ATM. It's all a bit above my head but I'll further look into it.

Cheers.

OK Wicket,

John at MAPC2MAPC is converting a map for me as I was having trouble using his product. I bought his program for his inconvenience and hopefully able to work it out for future use.

Cheers.

Hi Al,

I have been using Twonav for a few years on my Ipad without any issues and converted many ecw maps to the RMAP format using the free version of the Land software.
Just click on 'Maps' in the top menu and then select 'Convert Raster Maps'.
Select the ecw file you want to convert and then you follow the prompts from there. No need for any other software.

For copying them to an ipad I use a free ftp program called filezilla which can connect to the ipad over wifi and you then drag and drop the files into where they need to go.
If you need more help then let me know.

Hi Brett,
All went well.
My only issue now is when I turn the GPS function on it zooms out. I searched through settings but couldn't find where I could turn this off.
Any idea's?
Thanks.

Glad it worked for you Al.
There are lots of settings that can changed but I cant remember all right now as I don't have my ipad with me.
I will check it tonight and let you know what I have mine set at.
I had the issue that it would always zoom in too close when I started the app or recentred the map. But this autozoom can be turned off.

Thanks Brett,

Yeah I've had good look but can't find it ATM. It's gone from zooming out to zooming in. At this stage I have noticed it may be different when choosing between hiker, runner, 4WD etc.

Cheers mate.

Hi Al, finally got to fire up the ipad.
On the first list you get when you hit 'Settings' I would turn off 'Auto-open maps' as it will try to open other maps you may not want depending on where you are. Even with this turned off It will then only open the maps that you have selected the last time you closed the app.
Go to the bottom of that first settings page and select 'Full settings' then select 'Map Page'. This is where you configure the look and functionality of most things on the screen when the map is displayed.
Tool Bar - is at the top of the map screen and has buttons you can put there to change between maps, place pins, select 3d mode, change from north up, etc.
The Data bar is at the bottom of the map page and displays info such as speed, altitude, distance travelled etc. Select whatever you want to be displayed for both of these.
Then select 'Zoom and Re-centre' - this is where you go to turn that zoom feature off. Go into it and select 'Autozoom' and select no. Then select Re-Centre and turn off 'Re-centre autom'. When this is turned on the map will automatically re-centre to your current location after a set time (between 5 - 20 sec). This can be handy when driving but I find a pain if I want to just look at maps in general. Set this to what ever suits your needs.

That's just a small section of the options to configure the app. Its the one thing I certainly like about this over other apps is that it gives you the option to have it the way that suits you.

happy to answer other questions. Just ask away.

Hi Brett,
sorry for the late reply mate, I've had a doozy of a time with internet issues and I ended up with the TwoNav app not focusing when zooming on the map.
Thanks mate for all that, I'm getting my head around it.
I had to dump the app as I couldn't get it to respond, then I couldn't get the reloaded app to respond beyond choosing country. I've got it working again but it wouldn't 'register'.
Getting all the maps converted. Good stuff.

Hi Wicket,
I have converted OZF maps with it but I have had issues with the 'newer' OZF4 maps. OZF3 and earlier versions have always been fine. But when selecting the file you need to select the corresponding 'map' file rather than the actual ozf file. Hope that makes sense.
I emailed the developer some time ago who advised that they don't officially support OZF files so couldn't get commitment to when it might work. Think it might be a licensing issue.
Just to add, it was mainly the vicmap projection OZF maps (25k) I had issue with. Could not open them in Land software. Just gave some error, so I found another way to get it done but needed some other apps and I would need to explain that another time.

If you are prepared to wait a little while longer the new ExplorOz App for iOS and Android is designed to provide a dedicated ExplorOz solution for this. ie. EOTopo both on and offline mapping and navigation complete with Places hot spots and point to point navigation. I have to insist that with this advice that it is definitely NOT ready for release yet - cannot give a firm ETA but at least 4 weeks unless we do a pre-release... ie. working locally but have yet to go through the app store rigamarole etc. Please find an extra 24 hours per day and we can release it quicker ;)

I realize this but I have some specific maps produced by 'other' providers that are somewhat different in their content but would complement Eotopo maps.
I have recently moved from windows to ipad so some of my old maps need a new home.

No not possible sorry. Too complex to explain but our app will be for EO content only but will provide scaled map tiles to enable map zooming for greater detail etc even when using the offline maps so map functionality similar to how it is now in Places.

The Twonav is working fine with the Latest IOS update even though it's a bit laggy focusing on the map but they are working on that.

I have JPG's zipped working well on the Multiplans app also.

I thought I would download a copy of twonav and convert one of my ecw maps, after 7 hours of converting the dialogue box informed me it still had another 12 hours till finished, the map file was 2.4gb so I just gave up !
I also have memory map downloaded that came with a free copy of their aus topo map, it is actually very good and very clear and easy to read, might have to assign the twonav conversion process to the too hard basket.

19hrs is fine Wicket considering it was 2.4gb. It's not as if you have to sit there with your finger on the button.
