Hi ho possums,

Could those in the know provide an update as to what traveler facilities are still available in Leinster ?
caravan park / general store / fuel ..??

...& most importantly, is the Agnew pub still open ?

(There must still be life out there, given recent employment adverts)

many thanks

Its a mining town, nice to visit, but best to stay in Leonora, great CP there.

G'day Pete g1,

I was at Leinster July 2015.

Great c'van park, 24hr fuel (credit card) and great feed at the miners mess. $20 for 3 course meal and scoop ice cream available!!

C'van park cost was $15 for powered site with free washing machines and dryers.

There is a well provisioned supermarket open 7 days a week and this is where you pay the c'van park fee. There is also a hotel and bottle shop (limited range).

The hotel at Agnew appeared to still be open when we were checking out the old gold stamper nearby.

Regards,

Ian

Agree with Ian. We also were in Leinster in July 2015. Caravan park is quite good, self serve servo is interesting but this type is becoming more frequent in outback towns. Supermarket is very good. Certainly Leinster is not what it used to be but we enjoyed our overnight stay.

Leinster is well on the way to becoming a mining ghost town. From a peak population of over 700, probably less than 200 are left.

The BHP-owned Perseverance mine (the sole reason Leinster came into existence) was closed and put on care and maintenance in early 2014, and 300 people went, when that happened.

All that's keeping Leinster going at present, is the C&M crew, a few local (reasonably successful) gold miners, and tourists. There's talk of many of the town services shutting down for good. Spend a dollar there if you can, they sure need it!

The Agnew pub is still operational, but could soon follow Leinster into oblivion, unless there's a major upturn in the mining industry.

Cheers, Ron.

Sorry mate, but you are no where near the mark. I live in Leinster. The town has pretty much filled back up in the last 12 months. The camp is overflowing. I work at Agnew Gold Mine which has a pretty good future and is based in the Leinster camp. There is also folk in town from the Romelius run Vivien mine near Agnew. There is a supermarket, op shop, tavern, mechanical workshop and a few other things in town that are doing quite well. The Agnew Pub is closed and has been for a while

Well, I did say there was a few local successful gold miners keeping Leinster going - and I'll still wager the population is only around a third of its population peak of 700.
It is good to hear that the town is still kicking, though, in this era of minings constant major closures, layoffs, and extreme cost-cutting.

Re the Agnew pub, I was sure it was still going when I went through last year.
If it is actually shut, you'd better notify the Leonora Shire about updating their website (who still list the pub as being refurbished and offering all the facilities) - Yahoo News (who state it's still open in a Jan 2016 article) - and at least three dozen other sites and articles that all speak of the Agnew Hotel as a going concern in 2016.

The company I work for own it now. Not sure what their plan is with it. Just sits there gathering dust and seems to be a beacon for thieves. Kinda sad really.

I live in Leinster and there is a reasonably well stocked supermarket (bit pricey though), caravan park I'm pretty sure is $20 a night which you pay and book at the supermarket. Fuel station has always had fuel and is open again now selling fuel stationy stuff. There is a couple of mechanical workshops in town too if any repairs need to be done. Unfortunately the Aggie pub has been closed for a couple of years now but the tavern in town does a pretty good meal

Yeah you can still get a feed at the mess, though it's not as cheap as it was a couple of years ago.
