After 2 weeks research, including through this forum, and sometimes painful dealings with new car sales people, we have decided to keep our Patrol and maybe tweak it to gain better torque and performance. I am looking to put on a Beaudesert Exhaust and a Steinbauer Performance Chip. What are your opinions please?

Not much detail there.
Do you have any reasons other than price for this?
Any provable performance gains compared to other makes?

Hi Greg,
Get the biggest exhaust possible, no DPF, hi flow cat. Forget about the chip.

Include an EGT gauge with that fit. Remember the Steinbaur is a simple plug and play model that simply adjusts fuel rail pressure or fuel pulse so it provides more power by dumping more fuel into the motor. The resultant exhaust gases have to go somewhere so the larger exhaust system is a must. One of the byproducts of more fuel combustion is heat so you really need to know what's happening inside the motor temperature wise lest you slag out the top of the No.4 piston (a particular problem in the GU 3L models 2001-2004).

I did a write up on my performance mods on the Tojo here.

Ute build

The SB Chip does not dump more fuel into the motor. The SB chip adjusts fuel injection timing to create more power. Dumping more fuel into the motor is a technique used by other chips and is not desirable.

Thank you TerraFirma. That was my understanding with this chip.

Fitted a Beaudesert 3" exhaust to an 80 series wagon we used to have, Greg. Had a problem when it was rubbing on a long range tank and they rectified it, no charge. Highly recommend them.

Fitted a Redback system to our '02 Landcruiser ute(now sold) because I didn't want to root around with the dump pipe that Beaudesert now supply. Was a good system, very easy to fit. Spare parts are also available.

Can't comment on the chip, but feel there would be better options for that 3L engine.

First thing to do is to block the EGR
That way piston 4 has a better chance of survival in the future

I've got a Steinbauer on my rodeo.
It was worth doing, but a big exhaust would top it off nicely.

Hi Greg
I had a 2009 patrol and fitted a Steinbauer and 3" Taipan exhaust. Reason is that I did a 3 month trip towing a 3 tonne van plus tinny on the roof. Worked ok but the hills still pulled me up, it still is only a small motor.I also fitted an after market intercooler and exhaust, boost and transmission temp gauge just to keep a close eye on everything. Without the van on it moved along really well. Cheers, Boof.
