This is just to confirm that it's possible to use Skype at $2.82 per minute. Much cheaper than Telstra. Some landline resellers also offer better rates than Telstra.

Also a phone without call credit can still receive incoming calls and texts as well as connect with 000.

And here's a tip that's been posted before and it won't hurt to post again. From outfittersatellite.com:

Sending an Emergency Alert Message from the IsatPhone PRO Satellite Phone:

The IsatPhone PRO satellite phone has a powerful Personal Alert feature that can be sent to as many as 10 text or email recipients by simply pressing * and # simultaneously for 2 seconds from the main screen.

Before you are ready to send a personal alert a little setup is required. The alert message has the following elements:

Last GPS fix and time
Time that the personal alert was sent
Email address of recipient, if an email address was used
A short explanatory message

Use the Left Selection Key to access the Menu. Use the Center Selection and Navigation Keys to select the Extras icon. Highlight Personal Alert and press the Center Selection Key. Highlight Configure personal alert and press the Center Selection Key. You will now need to edit your recipient list and edit your personal message.

Make sure the personal message explains to your friends why they are receiving it. We recommend that you send at least one TEST personal alert broadcast so that your friends understand what they are receiving and what will be expected from them if a real emergency occurs in the future.

What happened when you called Ed? Silence? Recorded msg?

If you were Skyping, you'll have seen there's no entry for Inmarsat in the country list. My daughter did the test call and entered 0011, then the satphone number. The 0011 was stripped off in the subsequent screen.

Elsewhere I've read that you can pick any country and then the satphone number only.
