Yes, there is a road block/fruit fly/quarantine checkpoint at Oodla Wirra.

From our past experience they will take absolutely all of your fresh fruit and vegetables. They will also check your fridge.

The inspectors at both locations and great basically well mannered and just doing a job to protect the area from infestation of fruit fly which gives the farmers ability to export the products

I am in Broken Hill and we often go past the inspection station and all we get is hi and how is it going no fruit today we say yes and off we go because we are locals , but they do try o inspect tourists vehiclesbecause a few just try there luck and that spoils it for every one

but sadly a few decided to make the guys day by being rude and unhelpful why I have no idea

the major problem out this way is water Broken hill is on stage 3 water restrictions and a lot of chemicals are used in local water and some days undrinkable also no washing cars only bucket and sponge there is 2 car wash places open and doing a great busines

yep your right again. The cook bought 3 apples at the supermarket at Broken Hill that came from Adelaide and she was determined to eat all 3 at the Yamba road stop instead of throwing them in the bin, in front of the inspector who just grinned in amazement. Frozen vegetables and packed processed fruit is ok eg tinned, or single serve ones you buy in blister pack. They not only checked our fridge, we also had to open the draws as not to concile. The same happened at Ceduna, but she was happy to hand over a hand full of potatoes. We learnt our lesson previously.

Garry, that was our experience at Oodla Wirra - SA fruit purchased in Broken Hill with the full knowledge of where we were going (into SA) and of the origin of the fruit. But Mr Quarantine didn't care where it came from, and we WEREN'T allowed the opportunity to eat any of it, it all had to be surrendered.

I apprecite they have a job to do, and with good reason. OTOH why weren't we permitted to eat some of the fruit, and why isn't there a regime for returning commercially grown SA produce to be permitted back in, particularly as it was still in the supermarket packaging?

As a matter of interest spoke to one of the officers at Oodla Wirra last November, they do process the fruit and veg by cutting up and they do detect allot of contaminated fruit each year

Lettuce for us was confiscated. Prepare to donate every piece of fruit and every vegetable. On our first tip we checked the web site. The inspectors knew nothing about this list.

Can't understand that as I have crossed many times and they always had a good grasp on what was and what wasn't.

Hope you didn't upset them as that can lead to a forgetful memory.

We came from Broken Hill to Peterborough on Friday 13, very friendly officer on duty. He said you can now take washed potatoes, onions, clean root vegetables, no grapes or any other fruit. He checked in our van fridge, I had 2 homegrown carrots, washed clean and he said that's ok. But going into WA, is a different story, check online for all details.
