We had been planning our trip to Cape York when the July school holidays finished. We will be towing an off road caravan behind a land cruiser. Our concerns are finding up to date condition of the main road north. As yet I haven't been able to find a reliable source and considering the amount of rain in the area we are reluctant to head off without some assurance that the roads are in reasonable condition.
Does anyone have any ideas how we can get up to date info when we get to Cairns.

Try this site: Cook Shire Council.

And you could also ring the rangers at Cooktown.

For any 4wd trips and travel my first point of contact is someone or an organisation that is local to the area that I am going to. In this case Google quickly gave me the local council.

When we went up there I actually spoke to the local engineer. Not to a status board or the front counter. I hope this helps. I take note of the status boards etc but a bit of personal chat goes way beyond what you will find on the dumb internet.

And last year saw a photo of an on road Jayco up at the Cape, made me wonder why I spent all my Super on a off road van ?? ;o (((
It is only when you see mosquito land on your testicles that you find another way to solve problems without violence

Dont be too worried Maric.
your can can do the cape trip soo many times and handle it better than the on road van..
it also gives you an option that doesnt limit where you can go with the off road van.

I would never take the on road van up the cape more than once or twice in its lifespan of ownership.
You wont loose much money either as the offroad vans comand a premium new.
and your not competing with thousands and thousands of on road vans when its time to sell

When we travelled throught FNQ (including taking offroad camper trailer and Patrol to Cape York), we used the RACQ road conditions site. We found the information up to date and very helpful. I haven't had any need to look at recently, but can see it is still active/live.

Alan
