Quiet a few on Caravanners Forum are replacing their fridges with Samsung inverter fridges and small 300W inverters - be worth your while to do a search over there.

Never done it myself but a couple of friends have. Just need a decent battery setup and solar.

EVA Kool sells a range of sizes.

I replaced the Dometic (not sure what model but it was about 80 litres) 3-way fridge in my Ultimate Offroad camper trailer about 14 years ago with a 80 litre upright Engel.

As with all Engels, it has operated flawlessly and is (in my opinion) a MUCH better option.

It did mean that I had to add an extra battery (now have 2).

Never regretted it for a moment.

Thanks Roachie,
That's the one I have in my van, RM2355, if it plays up I will install the engel like yours. You can't complain about the life eh

What sizes is your Dometic fridge Ian? A quick Google indicates it is 150 litres. Do Engel make an upright that big?

When we purchased an old windup camper, it had a less than serviceable gas/240 volt fridge. We removed it and found an Engel upright (single door with tiny internal freezer box) that fitted the gap exactly. Height was critical due to the winding down of the camper. It was smaller than 150 litres, but I am not certain now exactly what size.

It fitting in the gap and we wired it to the 12 volt battery we fitted, as well as plugging in for 240 volt the same as the old one did. If 240 volt was active, it ran on that, and when not, reverted to the 12 v battery. It was a good fridge, but not as quiet as the silent Vitrifrigo we have in our present caravan, and as it was alongside my bed, I turned it off during sleeping hours. It maintained overnight, even in the freezer section.

Thanks for that, I was just looking to help a chap from one of the caravan forums.
I thought it was the same as mine RM2355 but his as you say was a RM2553, which is a lot larger. I haven't heard of the Vitrifrigo.

The recess the RM 2553 came out of is 1083 H 602 W & 610 D. Any further recommendations should neatly fit this space or they are just useless recommendations.
