We are going past
Iron Knob and I see that there are tours of the
mine operated by the info centre. Has anyone done the tour and what was it like. I know the town is a bit run down now, but their progress association is trying hard to get people to stop there as they have done up their camping ground and a few other things around town so will most likely
camp there as
well.

We did it a couple of years ago. It was quite good and included tour and commentary about the original
Iron Knob mine. There is a not too large lump of ore that if you can lift it you can keep it. You might need to upgrade your rigs carrying capacity though.
The
camp ground is very good, lots of room.

We dropped in there quite a few years back but didn't do the tour and the town was a bit rough. Things have changed I believe and now they need you to visit so we going to support the few that live there.

We visited
Iron Knob this time last year, and they were not doing any tours at that time. Yep the town is a little rough to drive through, and most of the workers are now bussed in from
Port Augusta. There is a good museum to look through with some fascinating video's to watch about the history of the
mine if you have time. Camping wise we moved on. There are no shops or fuel supplies in the town. Great watching the big dump trucks on the move etc. On speaking to the caretaker at the museum, he states not many visitors come through now. We were the only visitors that had called in in just over a week.

Garry
Your right about not many visitors as we where the only ones there on last visit, even the c/park was empty. I will have to give the
visitor centre a ring to see if the tours are available.
