I am planning a trip across the Simpson in mid Sept 2002, West to East. I have a 94 GQ Patrol Ti with 4.2l fuel injected petrol and automatic trans, all in good condition.
I would appreciate it if someone who has done the trip in a similar rig could tell me about their fuel useage. I have a fairly good idea, but am just looking for some confirmation.

Friends did the crossing with us in same vehicle as yours but a 98 model, last July. They used 180l from Oodnadatta to Birdsville - approx 700km. Conditions were ok with fairly firm sand. Expect higher consumption if the sand is dry and it may well be by September. They were carrying enough food and water for 2+2 so were quite loaded. It's a great trip so I hope you enjoy it!! By the way we spoke to a diesel cruiser owner at the same time who used a touch under 100litres!!! Diesel is obviously the way to go if the going gets tough!!

I would like to confirm these figures. The petrol patrol auto is certainly the thirsty one. I know of a case of someone using about 180 litres. A friend of mine did the rig road in a 4.5 man cruiser and used 150 litres Birdsville to Mount Dare and used 20l less returning via the French line. Most Diesels I have travelled with use around 90-110 litres and smaller petrols like Pajero 3l use around 120 l for rig road.

Hello Roller. We did the trip East to West last July in the Explorer auto etc carring enough firewood to sink a battleship with a fair bit of running around we covered 829 km to Oodnadatta and used 128 litres which cost $160 then. Have fun.

From Birdsville to Oodnadatta via French line in a 4.5l Cruiser (which is renown for its poor fuel economy) with a full load of gear, I used 175litres on a recent trip. I originally planned to go to Mt Dare to fill up, but when I reached Dalhousie Springs, I calculated that I had sufficient fuel to get to Ood.
Hope this helps........Cheers!
