Hi, everybody.

I'm 'new to the game' and planning to do the Birdsville Track next winter, without going into Simpson. Just wondering, if there is camping allowed/possible at the Big Red? I wouldn't have much time, but I would like to spend evening and the next morning there, to take photos.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

We have never camped there ourselves but there appears to be quite a lot of available space to set up camp. Among the trees on the Eastern side of the dune seems to be popular. We have seen several campers on the eastern side each time through there.

Go to 25 52' 47" S 139 03' 14" E on Google earth and have a look. There are two crossings of the dune with the northern one bigger. The northern one is the one where people "prove" their manliness! Joking. It's the bigger challenge if that is what you need.

Thank you very much, Phil for the info and coordinates. I don't really want to drive up on the top - maybe I am a weirdo. But, to stay there overnight and take pictures - that's the plan.

I forgot about Adria Downs. Give the police at Birdsville a call on (07) 4656 5677.

I have seen people camped around there but it's worth a checking.

They have camping there for special events but I am not sure you can camp there or not.

Why not make a phone call or two to Birdsville and ask, I would try the Ranger there, he is a friendly fella.

Thank you for the tip, Ozi M. I'll definitely call the Ranger, before I go there.

Definitely no camping on Adria Downs property, something to do with their organic beef status.
The own from the road end to the QLD Nat Pk boundary, so relaly the closest you can camp to Big Red is just inside the QLD part of Simpson Desert Nat Pk ($5 something a night pp).

That said, plenty do camp quietly in there but not near Big Red I imagine, but out around Eyre Ck . . . leave no trace type of camping an absolute must, and comfort fire really small (take own wood always).

If I were you, I'd use this as part of a run out to Peoppel Corner and back (QAA Line), you don't go into SA so don't need a Desert Parks Pass, nad QAA has some of the biggest and best dunes out there, and no bad undulations like further west on French Line.
An easy run out in a day from Birdsville if you leave early, time for some play and photos along the way.
Camp at the corner, or even just up Hay River Tk a little into the NT (totally permit / cost free and legit), then return next day.
