While Googling for something else, up pops an old thread on EO by 'Willem'.
Ahhh, it's just not the same without him, is it?
And then there was 'Mainey'.
What was a solar Thread without Mainey!
Controversial both. But their hearts were in the right place.

Hi Allan
He is still alive and kicking and drops into work and sees me when he is in
Clare.
I know it was a management issue and he had one too many arguments and was banned.
Cheers
Stephen

Yes Stephen, I know that Willem was not "playing-by-the-rules" but he was good value.

I agree, he was good value. Used to enjoy reading his comments It must have been fairy heated to upset management. Maybe he has served his jail sentence by now and allowed back on the
forum ? Cheers

Allan,
Not as lucky to see Willem in the flesh as Stephen is, but am friends with him on Facebook, so read his comments regularly. Still writes a good yarn, but regrettably Father Time is not being very kind to him.
He & Judith have recently returned from a trip to the Cape, and he's has another "Datto" project on the go.

Hi Bob, I'm afraid that Father Time has a lot to answer for!
But it's good to hear that Willem & Judith are still 'out and about'.
I don't know about the "Datto project" ? By that I mean 'the latest Datto project'

If you log onto Willem's
website Allan, and there will be revealed the fate of the maroon and beige Datto, called "Desert Rescue 2015". It's a lengthy, but interesting but also disappointing yarn.
The "new" Datto had a respray and some minor upgrades while the Kempins were up north, ready for further journeys by Willem, like the one quoted by Maurice below.
Looks like Willem has some of his 2016 travels on the site now too.

Thanks Bob, I do drop in on Willem's website from time-to-time and knew about the dramatic end to 'Datto' but was not aware that there was a new 'Datto ll' in the making.
Had also read-up on this year's Kempen travels and it makes me envious that we could not be out this year. But we are going over to Fraser Island in a week for a few days and beginning to plan for 2017.

Allan,
I remember Willem's posts from the early years of this
forum and always thought he was informative and balanced.
Internet forums are interesting creatures. I'm an expert having followed three of them. This one is still my favourite but I did stop logging on for a while because of electrical antagonism.
More recently, I stopped following a popular caravaners
forum that has been over-run by truckies who bait the grumpy oldies.
Not sure what I'll do now. Perhaps I'll buy a car.
I wonder what happened to Member No 1?

Shouldn't that be "electronic antagonism", Skull? :-)
No.1 still pops up here occasionally, he had a thread on here a month or two ago.

It cuts both ways there. There is a "grumpy oldie" that baits the ex truckies as
well.
"A".

Speaking of Willem, Has anybody know the whereabouts of 'Truckster'.
He, 'Roachie' (who has started posting again occasionally) and 'Willem' used to get into it a bit. When was that?? about 2001 or 2

There also was another guy that provided a bit of entertainment "way back when".
From memory he had a business in South Oz??? and made rear draw systems and maybe other stuff.
Disagree with him and he wanted to "come around and sort you out".......LOL.
Dunno what happened to him. Maybe someone took umbrage and sorted him out.
Cheers

Yes Willem hasn't stopped exploring. Quote from a recent post from Willem on a group I'm in. ''Planning a trip up to my
plaque north of the official Geo Centre for last week of April to first week in May. Will go north from Erabena
Airstrip. Will most likely just be a there and back trip for old times sake. Have not worked out a proper route yet. Will be driving my 'new' 1995 GQ TD42 Auto. With all the rain this year the Simpson might be overgrown by then :-)

I also miss Willem. Yes, he was opinionated and over the top and whatever he did to be banned was probably justified - but I still miss him.

Enjoyed Willem immensely and this
forum has not been the same since he was booted off. I have been a financial member for coming up for 14 years and I believe it has gone down
hill. Why, first up the thread sit up is crap, you can not find any thing. Why do I still pay......because I can and I am a member of other forums where I enjoy many gathering. And do not get treated like "you know what I mean"
