Water Hole East of Marble Bar

I have been told that there is an excellent water hole for camping, somewhere east of Marble Bar on the road to the Telfer Mine, but I have forgotten its name. Can anyone help please? Thanks.

Cheers, Kevin

Carawine Gorge is my pick in that region but it is off the Woodie Woodie road, not Telfer road.

But not this week, The Oakover River is in flood after some good rain in the last week or so.

Thanks rocco. That's the one. But I didn't say Telfer Road. I said the road to Telfer Mine as that was the way that it was described to me.

Thanks for the flood warning but you will never see me in that area in January. How about May? Will that be better?

Kevin

I am no expert but I know people living that way and they have been very happy with the rain after some dry years. The country was as dry as chips when i was there in August, by May it should be nice and lush, particularly if there is follow up.

I hope to be back there in June.

Enjoy it.

"but it is off the Woodie Woodie road, not Telfer road."

You get to the junction of those two roads from Marble Bar along Ripon Hills Road.

Carawine Gorge is an excellent campsite. It is a large permanent waterhole backed by high cliffs. Sunrises are spectacular. Bird life is intense. A bit too intense for some as the reed warblers will serenade you all night long. There is green grass at the Northern end, often being grazed by a few friendly Brahmin bulls.

Some form of watercraft will add to the experience. In a kayak it is possible to padddle upstream for several kilometres. A lilo will enable you to get out to the middle for a swim or across to the other side where it is possible to climb to the top of the cliffs for great views.

A word of caution if towing. Beware the river rocks. These slippery suckers have bogged many caravans. They are even difficult to walk on.These rocks seem to be unique to this part of the Pilbara and are prevalent near water along the Skull Springs Road. The way to avoid them is to turn right just before the Gorge, drive across the airstrip and then down a firm track to the grassy Northern end.

Many thanks to Motherhen who alerted me to this issue on this forum years ago.

Cheers, John

Took us some time and digging to get our 'bogged' 7.5 tonne combination off these.

I later learnt that you could take the track north for better camping.

If the birds are too noisy all night you can turn on your generator and drown them out... :-) Just a little cross thread humour.

Where is Jasper Gorge? The only Jasper Gorge I know is nowhere near Marble Bar.

Jasper "Pool" was what we noted at the time of our visit; from memory only about 10km or less from Marble Bar, out the north of the township and then take a left. It is a rocky waterhole backed by cliffs of quite striking stone (hence the Jasper).

We camped at Carawine Gorge late September 2016. Take the first turnoff to the right as you come into the camping area to avoid the pebbly base. Wiki Camps detailed the area well. There is some Glacier polished outcrops on the track in that are interesting (also on Wiki).

There is another must see location nearby called Running Waters. Once again Wiki details it well, you need to turn left at the kangaroo sculpture of n the very top of the hill. it has a small camping available.

Be aware that Carawine Gorge is private property and part of Warrawagine Station.
The owners do not ask visitors to contact them prior to using the spot, but there is an obligation to take all rubbish out when you leave, and please do not drop your grey water close to the pool.

This is a special place and only by taking great care of it can we be sure it will remain open for people to enjoy.

Cheers,
Peter

Good one Peter, I was going to post the same thing myself but too slow at this time of the morning. :-))
The Mills family that runs Warrawagine Station also put notices up advising campers of when mustering is being done, if you don't see the signs you'll soon find out!
I first went there in about 1980 (from Telfer and before the Ripon Hills Rd was in)and there were many more trees then but a cyclone wiped a lot out, but they're regrowing and it's a great spot and lets hope happy campers keep looking after it.
The bulls are very friendly as others have said but Running Waters has a couple of old wild, mean looking ones down there so be aware of that as well.

When we were at Carawine a couple of years ago two bulls decided to put on a show of strength to each other while walking along the river bank and then right in the middle of our group of vans had a bit of a stouch. Very entertaining but a bit concerning with great big bulls 'fighting' each other. Having put on a show they wandered off still bellowing (or laughing) to each other.
Great place to camp though.

I'm one of the road supervisors here on the Telfer Access Road.
Our road has been closed for near on two weeks now and we are expecting more rain.
There has been some heavy flooding out at Ragged Hills which has given us a lot of extra work to do there.
All the nearby rivers are flowing really well so once all has dried up Carawine Gorge will be very good to visit when the weather cools down.
All the green algae will have well and truly flushed away.
Good luck

I remember back about 1980 when the only way in to Telfer and Woodie Woodie for trucks etc. was via the road down through Warrawagine St and over 3 rivers with no bridges. It's not a maintained road now but the station keeps it in fairly good condition.
Had so much rain that year the road was closed for 6 weeks stranding 3 trucks at Telfer mine site.
Luckily the beer came in by plane.. :-))
When it rains out there it really rains.
