If you don't need a reversing camera, just use your ipad or tablet and download one of the mapping apps eg: memory map. Will save yourself dollars aswell as having a larger screen and use of all the tablet features. Just ensure your ipad/ tablet is GPS enabled, which is easy to confirm.

Are the mapping apps eg: memory map as good as a Hema off-road navigator for $600, Tony?
The tablet GPS sounds incredibly effective if the maps are good.

IMHO, the map packages you can get with memory map are better, simply because you get the topo maps as
well, you will have access to the Hema maps on there to. From memory I think I paid around $180 for the map packages and have around 110 maps covering all of Australia. When you download the app, they give you a 10 day free trial, I have used MM for the last 6 years and we do some remote travel and have always been able to track my course.

Tony,
I am with you one memory map. If you already have a tablet device it is great value (free) and a good starting point on electronic navigation
I guess I am old fashioned but I still use paper maps to work out where I want to go and then MM on the iPad tells me where I am in relation to that. Don't really need to know much more than that
Being WA based there are more maps in a Hema device that I would use in several lifetimes. For this year's travels I plan to add the
EOTopo package.
Cheers

I also have Memory Map installed on my iPad. You need to have the 3/4G version of the iPad as it has the GPS receiver. With Memory Map you can buy a variety of Aus maps including Topo and the Hema series. The Memory Map program is free to download and comes with a few free maps. The program is a little quirky with respect to licence management and installing maps. Nevertheless the email support is very good.
We usually have all our trips tracked on the iPad using Memory Map. Does an excellent job with the tracking. Only time it has issues is in mountainous areas. Recommended.

If you buy a package you may end up with maps that don't do what you want, so the first thing is to decide what you need the maps to do for you. Then you may have choices about the hardware and software to run them on.
Maps vary by scope, accuracy, scale, detail, (inc. structures, gates), POIs and whether the detail varies by zoom level (raster v vector).
You may or may not need auto-routing. I will make a general statement and say that it's usually not to be relied on in the bush.
Best thing is to look at the map for an area you know
well and judge how much of a guide it is. (Ask the map seller to do a screen dump for you.)
In the case of scale, if you need to navigate tracks esp in the mountains, anything smaller than 50K is in my opinion not useful such as 100K or 250K which are commonly on offer.
HTH.

Our family (now 5 cars) all use a VMS box installed in the dash.

Hi Garnet
There are some super deals going on at the moment for the Hema HN7 and they are a great unit.
Cheers
