They have arrived here in Telfer, must be all the water that is attracting them

Sorry but you have been left behind , stilts are changing names faster than Superman changes underwear. Black winged is now used for an African bird according to Ebird.

You are correct and yes, so am I :) - think its "preferred" name may have been white headed stilt for a while - listed as that in Pizzey and Knight way back in 2012 (with pied and black winged as alternative options)
Next time I will just quote the scientific name (though for some birds this is argued about also) :)

Yes they are definitely stilts but one other type lives in Australia Greg and I were trying to be specific .

They are a shore bird ie need water so yep with rain occurring just about everywhere in WA doesn't surprise me at all

Re mention of the name Pizzey...Graham was/is a legend re his work in the natural environment...being greatly recognised, awarded (hon. Doc. and others) and gonged (AM) his beautifully illustrated bird book is worth every cent (several editions to date). As for these waders...another one is the red necked avocet....quite impressive...and as for that bill...classic design !
