Traditionally all along the Diamantina River just a couple of km SE of town.
There are areas for the races crews / horse yards etc, and areas for general camping.
It's an interesting drive through there seeing the infrastucture, and one of the Burke & Wills blaze trees down near the old crossing end.
This is all on the west side of the Birsville Tk, and from the looks of it the nicer side, but east of the road there is also camping.
Get in early & leave late (2 - 3 days either side of races dates), to avoid lots of traffic on all access roads, or via the desert.

Get in early is good advice. I was in Birdsville two years ago a fortnight before the races and people were already setting up in the better spots out of town.

Cheers

Watch the weather if you need to be somewhere after. Also carry plenty of fuel. Always a bottleneck anywhere around once the races are over. Let last year serve as a lesson. Once they opened one road there was a lineup 5 km long at Bedourie and Boulia

Came through a couple of days ago. The 'free camp' areas near town filling up...

I have always camped on the left heading into town before the bridge, there is a little section that I used to cross over the creek and camp in relative peace the other side. Bit of a walk into town but an even longer stagger back from the pub :)

Between the race course and the river and close enough to the road to walk to the bus that runs between town and the course. Alternatively, as close to the causeway as possible and put up with the crowding by remaining well hydrated.
