Huskisson NSW to Canberra

Hi Everyone,
We are at Huskisson in NSW and wish to take our 23ft van over the range to
Canberra. What would be the recommended route? I wonder whether the Illawarra Highway from
Kiama via Moss Vale would be ok.

From Huskinson, go to Nowra, then past the HMAS Albatross navy air base and follow the road through
Nerriga to Taralga, then Bungendore and
Canberra. Easy drive, only one short steepish climb near
Nerriga, sealed road all the way. Also probably the shortest distance from there to
Canberra.

From Huskisson drive west on the Jervis Bay Rd to the Princes Hwy left turn south,drive a few clicks and turn right onto the Turpintine Road follow thru until you meet the
Braidwood Rd and go from there.
Bit quicker than via Albertross

Are you comfortable that a van 23 ft van will be ok following Troupers route as this would avoid going back to Nowra. I don't want to get caught on a narrow road with tight curves ect. This is our first time in this area, so we don't know things.

Yes, you should be ok on that route. Some curves and bends but no hairpins. Not sure about Turpentine Rd, but the rest is all sealed.

We were at Jervis Bay last year and we went
home via Turpentine road -
Nerriga down to
Braidwood. There was a fair bit of unsealed road. We were up there again only 3 weeks ago and I checked with the NSW Roads people and they said it is still unsealed in
places.

Going all the way down to
Braidwood is the long way and as indicated does have some unsealed sections - from Huskie - out to the highway - Turpentine Road down the
Nerriga Road then turn off to
Tarago (not Taralga which is west of
Goulburn) via the Oallen Road and then from
Tarago to Bungendore and
Canberra - is all sealed and reasonable road .

The Turpentine Rd is now fully sealed. Dont go to
Braidwood as it is unsealed for about 20 clicks. Use the Oallen Ford Rd to
Tarago,Bungendore,
Canberra

Hooks, my recommendation, for what it's worth, would be to travel south from Husky to Bateman's Bay and turn right onto the King's Hwy and follow that through to
Canberra via.
Braidwood.
I know that the other routes that have been recommended are indeed the shortest but there are some dicey sections on that route, especially just past
Nerriga where that road passes through a very steep dip in the road. OK if you know it's there, as you now do but a shocker if you don't.
My suggested route is certainly longer in distance but the road conditions are 100% on the
Nerriga route IMO. I have taken my smaller van from Nowra to
Goulburn via
Nerriga but it would worry me with a large van knowing that road.
Either way take care and happy travels.

Except you have to climb Clyde Mountain - the road surface is good but it is a long steep, slow, windy climb up the mountain.
Yes there is that dip on the leaving outskirts of
Nerriga but is not such an issue - particularly as he now knows it is there.

I live in Husky/Vincentia & go across to
Canberra regularly
1) Huskisson to turpentine rd. sealed not a problem
2)
Braidwood Rd to
Nerriga NOT a problem
3)
Nerriga to Oallen rd. Beware the 1st creek crossing/Dip take at 5-10klms max the the Road is a bit narrow if you meet someone with the same size van or a truck you might/will put the left wheels in the Dirt it’s also a bit bumpy
4) Oallen rd. to
Shoalhaven river starts good a gets similar to what you have traveled from
Nerriga
5)
Shoalhaven river to
Tarago turn off, starts great then goes to the same as
Nerriga to Oallen turn off type rd.
From the Oallen Rd turn off to Tarago/Bungendore/
Canberra there is no problems
It is a bumpy tow thru to
Canberra or
Goulburn & some sections are narrow & there is several dips/causeways etc. but take your time & DO NOT HOGG the centre of the road & you will not have a problem I tow thru this way all the time, Try not to travel on Friday night as its very busy & also Sunday afternoon & Monday morning the rest of the time is very quiet & it’s by far the Quietest way across
