We are thinking of taking the Grand Central from Uluru to Karijini ( we are from
Melbourne) however as we have previously done the Tanami to Broom,
Gibb River etc we are not sure which direction to head after Karijini as we do not want to do the same track and do not want to go south from Karijini to Kalgoolie and then
Melbourne.
We are planning a trip in July /August of about 6-8 weeks ex
Melbourne and return and are open to ideas. We are travelling in a 200 Series Landcruiser and Ultimate camper so roads/tracks are not an issue. I just do not like backtracking or going over previous roads/tracks.
The other alternative trip is Arkaroola/Oodnadatta/Finke/Plenty Hwy/Boulia/Birdsville/
Melbourne. We have done the Simpson/Flinders/Kimberleys etc
Would appreciate feedback/suggestions on either route or alternate routes as we are undecided??
Cheers
Wil

The
Great Central road is a long way about in getting to Karijini. Once there though you could head east through
Nullagine and onto the Skull Springs Road to the
Telfer Road taking in Eel
Pool, Carrawine
Gorge and Karlamilyi (
Rudall River) National Park. Then pop back onto the
Telfer Road and follow it down over the Canning at
Well 33 to
Alice Springs (it's called the
Gary Junction Road once it is east of the Canning) and/or continue east on the Plenty to
Boulia and down that way to
Melbourne.
Alternately, when in Rudall, you could exit south and then head east on the Talawana Track to the Gary Highway and turn left up to the
Gary Junction and then to Alice again as per above.
You're spoilt for choice really.
Safe travels
Mick

Rough idea for you from
Laverton to
Leonora, north to
Wiluna, west to
Meekatharra, north to
Newman turn off the Grt Northern Hwy into Karijini.
Home leg south west out of Karijini to
Tom Price and then down the Ashburton Downs Rd turn left down the Asburton Downs Pingandi Rd to Mt Augustus, from here you can do
the loop over to the
Kennedy Range, take tracks (
well maintained roads) to Gascogne
Junction and then back east towards the Grt Northern Hwy and then down to Mt Magnet and from there east to the Gold Fields Hwy and back down to
Leonora and then east again to
Laverton but instead of taking the GCR take the Anne Beadell to Cobber Pede and the southwards
home from there.
Enjoy your trip. The above will take you through some really scenic areas.

A few years ago we did the
Kimberley and on the way back went down to Karijini, then down to
Newman, topped up and then onto
Rudall River and across the Talawana, down to
Warburton and then through to Surveyor General Corner. We were fortunate to have had permission to travel through the APY Lands but you could also backtrack from SGC up to Uluru.
As Mick says, spoiled for choice really

Thoroughly recommend the
Gary Junction Marble Bar to
Papunya Wil. A lovely drive - much nicer, more scenic and better condition than the Great Central or Tanami due to so much less use.
Check MyBlogs 2009.

Go west into mill stream.
Well worth the diversion. Can go on the
mine road which is about 140klm all dirt. Need to get permit and watch video. Don't wear red or you will stop the trains and they don't like that.

In truth, I didn't think anything stopped the trains.
