G'day all,
I am trying to find information about interesting day tours from
Adelaide as an activity for a 'Men's Shed' group. I am the only one with a 4WD, so the tours need to be suitable for a conventional vehicle - say a Ford Territory.
So far we have done:
*Tea Tree Gully >
Burra >
Hallett > Dares
Hill > Ketchowla >
Terowie > Tea Tree Gully trip (Tourist Drive 21), all day trip
*Tea Tree Gully > Mt Pleasant > Sanderston >
Marne River Valley >
Black Hill >
Shell Hill >
Mannum (lunch and Port Museum) > Tea Tree Gully, a 200km 5 hr trip
*The Tramway Museum at
St Kilda (lunch and 2 hrs)
*The new RFDS facility at
Adelaide Airport (1 hr)
*Numerous smaller trips
I have done a Google search for 'day trips' etc, but nothing suitable was found.
Our Men's Shed group are all retired gents, from a diverse working background, so I am looking for something interesting to fill out (say) 4 hrs to all day.
I was wondering if any ExplorOz forumites know of any recognized 'day' trips, or have their own favourite drives, with details of special points of interest etc.
Looking forward to replies...
Cheers,
glids

Hi Glids, We have previously visited the National Motor Museum in
Birdwood. Found it really great display of vehicles and many other interesting items.
Another one we enjoyed (much closer to the
Adelaide CBD) is Carrick House.
Enjoy

Hi Glids
Here is a great drive for you in the southern parts
Adelaide.....
Make your way to Strathalbyn, then down to
Milang and visit the old railway station and then drive along the shore of Lake Alexandria to
Wellington, then cross over the Murray on the ferry.
Head further south to Poltalloch and then visit the remains of the only Freshwater Lighthouse in Australia at Point Malcom.
Cross over at the Narrows on the ferry and visit the great Aboriginal Community at
Raukkan and then drive the
Lake Albert drive that will bring you to
Meningie.
It is a great drive and Bitumen road the whole drive. Lots to see, some great country and lots of early days history through the area.
Or if you are looking for a real short drive, head for the
Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens in a few more weeks when the Autumn colours are unreal
Just a couple of ideas to toss around with.
Cheers
Stephen

Good to see the lower lakes get a mention. I am from WA and have visited there a couple of times.
Was a Good cafe at Ruakkan.
The Coorong is special.
I get SA Tourism ads in my Facebook feed and they are all about the Hills,
Kangaroo Island,
Flinders Ranges and Eyre Peninsula.

Thanks Stephen, I will keep that one in mind. May be a long day though as we start from Tea Tree Gully.
I know the
Lake Albert area reasonably
well, brother-in-law had a dairy on the
Narrung to
Meningie road.

G'day Glids,
At the risk of mentioning the obvious, the Barossa Valley takes some beating. Take a look
at this.
Or the
Clare Valley. Both on your side of The Village. lol
I am really surprised that Stephen didn't promote them.

Thanks Allan,
We are looking more at
places of interest rather than wine tasting. Having said that, the Barossa can be short-listed for further investigation.
I know the
Clare Valley
well - my other brother-in-law has an aboriginal
art gallery there, and I have done a lot of work up there helping him develop it.
Cheers,
glids

There's more there than wine tasting.
I used to take interstate visitors on
Adelaide Hills cellar door tours but always wound up with a headache. Switched to "Significant Old Buildings". It was cheaper too. lol

Also if you want some history, there is the fine old mansion "Martindale Hall" that everyone would know that was used in the Australian Classic Film, "Picnic at Hanging Rock"
As I am not into wine, there is still lots more to see in the beautiful
Clare Valley besides wineries .
Cheers
Stephen

Hey Stephen,
You don't need to drink wine in order to visit classic wineries.
I mean like, I strolled down
Hay Street in Kalgoorlie without tasting the 'fruits'! LOL

http://normanvillekioskandcafe.com.au/
followed by Yankalilla Historic Museum(Lots of
heritage machinery, buildings, clothing, mining, photos etc. Self guided tour at a small cost)
http://community.history.sa.gov.au/yankalilla-district-historical-museum-0
May be able to catch up with the Yankalilla Mens Shed
140/142 Main S Rd, Yankalilla SA 5203 0417 300 901
Meet new friends, exchange ideas, etc.
The following for another day.
Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram

There's a few restaurants, cafes, takeaways etc in the area
There's many backtracks (dirt roads) from Myponga onwards to get to Normy/Yank/Victor if you don't want to travel the the main road.

Thanks for your ideas, Steve.
We have done the Aviation Museum.
I was looking at Myponga, along the lines of: TTG > Myponga >
Blowhole Creek > Ingalalla Falls >
Victor Harbor >
home.
Blowhole Ck and the Falls would depend on weather, and if worth going.
I'll keep the Normanville Jetty Cafe in mind, and also the Yankalilla Museum - didn't know about either of them!
Great ideas.
Cheers,
glids

Yeah, cheers!
My son, son-in-law and B-i-L in
Clare are all getting into it.
Not sure that the rest of my Men's Shed Group would be that keen, but I agree about where the geocaches take you.

Seeing as you're locals, you've probably visited most local
places of interest before, but here goes:
*
Kapunda mine.
*
Moonta Mines.
* In the Barossa; Chateau Yaldara (nice cafe), Seppeltsfield, Mengler's
Hill lookout at
Tanunda,
Whispering Wall, & closeby to the Barossa, the
lookout at
Eden Valley with the big cross.
*
Burra again, but with the tourist key for all of the local sights.
* The museum on
the wharf at
Morgan.
*
Kangaroo Creek dam is currently near empty for an upgrade & only just up the road from you. We went for a look on Saturday, interesting & very close.
If you're in the TTG area, our paths almost certainly cross!
Good luck with it! :)

Dont think anone has mentioned historic town of Handorf with its links with early German settlers ? Probably best to go there midweek as i would imagine half of
Adelaide go there weekends

I think most of our group would already have been to
Hahndorf. Looking for something a little more 'out of the way'.

If you want to do something really interesting then take a free tour of
parliament house, most days at 10.30am i think, you will be very surprised at some of things you find out !
Strangely most locals haven’t a clue this exists ,your mates will enjoy it.
