Hi, I have a new Garmin Street Pilot 2610. with # 5 info, today I down loaded the latest version # 6.1 on to my PC. I can open it there but cant find the links to load it onto my GPS unit. I bought an extra card , so that if I had a hiccup I wont lose the lot. But have read all the books etc but cant find the commands they list to load it.
I can connect the GPS to the PC via USB port and the PC recognised the hardware but still no luck. If any one can direct me ( in plain talk) what I have to do I would appreciate it very much. Cheers Des.

Des, Ok the latest "Firmware update is ver 3.5 dated 20.5.2004 downloadable from Garmin and self loading.
Where did you get your 2610 as it is my belief that all 2610's sold in Australia shipped with latest map software which is Ver 5. Ive been upgrading Street Pilot 3's to City Navigator Australia Ver. 5 and am not aware of any further updates being available.
Any upgrade will need a lock code and is uploaded via the Mapsource program.
Ok I think Ive found it. If you go to the Garmin site and look under software updates there is an update for Mapsource to Version 6.1 with details of changes which I still have to read but Im almost certain any changes refer to Mapsource which is the computer side of the equation and not to be confused with the 2610 or any other Garmin GPS.
Hope this helps
Bob L
PS Open Mapsource and open Help on top line and then open "About Mapsource " and I think you will find you are now running version 6.1.
Thanks for the info I will update my copy as
well.

Hi. Bob , sorry about delay but have been to
Streaky Bay fishing for a few days. We managed to down load the 6.1 up date but couldn't find the links / commands on the 2610 to load it from the PC to the unit. We can open it ( with the lock No's) and read it on the the PC. but can get no further. are the commands in the Menu on the unit?. Bought a new card , Just incase we wiped the old one. But will keep trying , Thanks for your help Cheers Des.

Des.
The latest "City Navigator" version IS version 5 which should have been loaded to the 2610 as purchased. This version is only a couple of months old ie it was released at the same time as the 2610 and iq3600. An upgrade was also made available for the now discontinued Street Pilot 3.
The Upgrade which you refer to as 6.1 is an upgrade for Mapsource which is the computer software only and has no effect on the 2610 at all.
Just to confuse the issue there is a Street Pilot 2610 version 3.7 software upgrade on the Garmin web site dated 16.6.2004.
If you download this to your Garmin Directory you will see will create an update icon which will enable you to update the 2610 firmware.
Just to clarify
1. City Navigator is the Mapping software used by Mapsource and the GPS.
2. Mapsource is the computerSoftware used for trip preparation etc and transfering information between GPS and computer.
3. Upgrades listed under Street Pilot 2610 are the GPS "firmware" upgrades which are created to fix operational problems.
Anotherway of looking at it, both 2 and 3 appear on the Garmin site as software upgrades for FREE.
Any mapping changes to City Navigator will most likely cost $$$$$$'s
By the way the V.5 upgrade was listed at US$125 for any units purchased and Registered prior to 1.3.2004. Luckily none of my customers registered prior to 1.3.2004 and obtained the their Upgrades for free.
Hope this clarifies the situation. DON"T try and upload any upgrades that
at are not specific for your 2610 ie pay heed to the warnings on the Garmin site.
Cheers
