Looking for information on brake upgrade. Standard brakes are poor when hot, has anyone upgraded to disc or atleast something that works?

Most brakes are poor when hot and get worse as they get hotter.
They are made to stop the vehicle and with normal use they shouldn't get near to becoming poor in retardation. What is making them so hot as to experience loss of braking?

You can get pads to improve braking when hot but they are usually less effective when cold.

Are your discs, solid discs or ventilated?
Are you towing and the trailer hasn't got brakes which loads the vehicle brakes?
Do you have larger dia tyres which makes braking less effective?
Is the vehicle heavily loaded?

You may be able to fit larger dia discs and suitable calipers from a later model if there is a design deficiency with your system.

A bit more in depth of what vehicle you have would be good.
I have done the slotted rotors and new pads on the front and had the lpsv valve checked on the hj47 cruiser of mine.
But what really did wonders was a brake booster upgrade and smaller bore master cylinder.
My brakes are awesome when not loaded and fantastic when loaded and towing !!
Can assist you with brake shop to help in your issues.
But where in the country are you
Why are your brakes poor..
You carry and tow alot ?
The vehicle has any ABS or other systems on it ?
Delica , pajero..... triton or even challenger model ???
I have someone that does alot of custom brake mods..
This is half his business.
Hot rods or old chevies or Valliant
He makes them brake to what you would expect a new car too...
For a 50year old car i mean...

Are you talking about rear drums or does your car have front drums? I would have thought a 1999 model would have front discs. Whatever it is, have a talk to this company. Hoppers They have been making brake kits for just about everything for decades so they should be able to help you.

You most probably find that if you had your brakes machined new pads new fluid etc would work like as new again unless you have put large wheels and tyres on then you may need a specialist for help
I know when I put larger tyres on my 03 Triton the breaks were not adequate for my liking although it did pass an engineers inspection

Unless totally stuffed, machining and same new pads and fluid change won't alter anything. Unless the coefficient of friction is changed to operate at higher temps the brakes won't be any better when hot. Changing fluid doesn't alter anything unless there is water in the fluid. If there it can boil and prevent brakes actually doing anything, which is not his stated problem.
